M40i aftermarket exhaust

This was an interesting video where Rory Reid talks about exhaust noise and the law in the UK/EU:

All of these aftermarket systems, are they legal? For people that straight pipe their exhaust, how do they still pass the MOT? I'm a bit confused.

MOTs check specified items for safety - they're not policing what can drive on the roads

I wish that was the same for bikes. There are a lot of MOT stations that will not pass a bike if the pipe doesnt have a BS stamp, the manufacturers mark or if its been modified in any way.

MOT can fail a car because the exhaust is too loud!

You are correct. Upon looking this up - it's ridiculously subjective!

The Tester will inspect:

""Exhaust silencers
- under-bonnet noise deadening material fitted as original equipment.
- Exhaust noise will be assessed during the emissions test for the vehicle or by revving the engine to around 2,500rpm or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower on vehicles not subject to an emissions test

Exhaust noise from the vehicle must not be unreasonably above the noise level normally expected from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition.""

Im getting mine tuned next week ECU and exhaust modification. Here in Belgium we're a little limited in what is allowed but the company suggested some remus exhaust tips.

I decided to keep the original exhaust tips since i like the look of them on the m40i, instead they will modify some parts of the existing exhaust to get a better sound out of them.

heinz performance belgium changed my existing exhaust for me 430 horsepower and 666 nm torque now :)

not sure if linking to google drive wil work

Thanks, yes its a lot louder now, and in eco comfort in the low rpms its just as quiet as before, so i can still sneak away at 5am without waking up half the neighbourhood :D

Did you ask for special program?
As Heinz mentions 400/580nm...or was it just more after they tuned it?
Is it also noticeably quicker?

400/580nm is their default tune for the engine, the numbers change a little for each car, and I think the modifications to the exhaust might be the reason why its higher. They adjusted it so its optimized for E5 Fuel instead of e5 and e10, i'm not sure if they always do that.

In my opinion the difference is huge, you definatly get pulled back in to the seat more when accelerating.
