M3 ICE modifications

My M3 came with a Harmon Kardon system. It lacks the usual bass even though they supply it with what they call a subwoofer. It isn't a subwoofer by any stretch of the imagination. It is installed in a door that when opened and a section of the rear seat is removed becomes a "ski pass". I don't ski.

I removed the sub, hell, I removed the entire door panel and had a custom box made. Bavarian Soundwerks made an enclosure like this but discontinued it a few years back. So I had one made out of 3/4" MDF and it is sealed for the Audiobahn sub.

In this photo you can almost see the Alpine monoblock MRD 500 sub amp mounted on the side. This will be out of sight soon because I am getting the carpeted panel that will conceal it entirely.

Since I removed all the HK speakers I needed a 4 channel amp. I carved out of the foam (that holds the Mobility Kit) a space for the amp. Since this pic was taken I cleaned up the wiring. I used a jigsaw to cut slots in the cover and a paddle drill bit to cut some holes for ventilation. I got a bit artsy with my non-standard pattern.

Next I went to install the iPod and GPS unit. I really despised the window mount. Nothing stealth about it. So I came up with the notion of installing the GPS ball mount in the sunglass compartment. The ball mount is removable...totally stealth. I also ran a power cord from the fuse box to the sunglass holder compartment.

The small knob by the cup holders is the sub amp gain control.

Thanks for all the compliments.

I did the calculations for the air space for a sealed sub, it came out very very close to the internal box dimensions. I covered it with enclosure carpet (I tried to find an exact match to no avail), a little velcro on the leg bottoms and viola! I dynamatted the trunk and licence plate to get rid of those annoying rattles.

The neighborhood and my cul-de-sac neighbors love it. (I actually it down when entering the subdivision. :innocent: )
