I always remember that chap who bought an M coupe last year and was harking on a similar thread that the OP should 'buy the M as it's only a little bit more to run than the 3.0'

The chap then sold his months 6 later after the inspection II, brake change and a few mechanical issues cleared out his bank account

35i and 35is contenders ?

Was a no brainer for ourselves

Cheaper tax disc. OK mpg and lots of low down torque (max from 1300 rpm)

For a daily driver that we don't have to rev hard to get the best out of the engine.

This is not true, but you will have to have it serviced at a main dealer going forward if you take out a BMW warranty.

I was meaning if he bought privately. There are 3 types of cover you can only get the fully insured comprehensive BMW warranty if you are renewing your warranty as an AUC or from your original 3 year. Otherwise you have to take one of the other two options.
 
On a weekly basis including Tax,insurance and fuel i would say my M costs about £15 extra over my 3.0 coupe...

I do use the car as a daily,but do low miles..

As of yet,im 11k off service,and thats just an oil service....Tyres are new,discs like new,pads will need changing in 10k approx..



Budget supercar..... :thumbsup:
 
if i was using the car daily id buy a 3.0si..... imo of course for a weekend thrash the ///M but in the daily grind the 3.0si will do everything the ///M can imo and cheaper.
 
Got to laugh at the snobbery, as if a second hand BMW ///M car is some kind of status symbol :lol: I can think of plenty of cars that cost a similar amount that would make a Z4M look 'mediocre' performance wise. The worst thing you can do in life is try and chase 'the best' as there is always better out there, no matter how fast/rich etc you are. On the other hand, being humble is priceless.

See, now you're starting a whole new debate - but which I think has also been done before. I am pretty sure that thread did not throw up too many similar costing cars that deliver the same performance, let alone that make the M look mediocre. Can't be arsed checking though as the debate on this thread is not about whether the OP should have a Z4 or not, rather which variant he should have.

The original question was whether the performance of the M is worth spending £70 a month more on than he would on a 3.0Si. I think from what has been said that the answer is definitely yes, as long as you can afford the car and the running costs, balanced against how you would use it and your comfort with low-ish MPG if it is a DD. If only for the fun you can have at the weekends when not commuting :driving:

+ 10, it's been at least a month since this popped up. Alongside the perennial favourite 'non m cars with m badges', 'what engine size should I get' and the old standby 'should I buy a coupe or a roadster' it's all a bit ground hog day.

Bottom line, M's ain't cheap to run, if you want one buy one. When you stuck behind a lorry at 7am it doesn't matter what engine you've got or how many trumpets at the back. :evil:

Most of the British public will probably think your in a TVR or something anyway, they haven't got a clue what an M car is. Only car nerds care.

I agree & around where I live it wouldn't matter if you had a 1000bhp you would still struggle to overtake as there is mostly plenty of traffic coming the other way or several cars in front of you...not sure they would think it was a TVR though as when I had mine nobody knew what it was who I spoke to! :lol:

I think you'll find it was the guy boasting about his Z4M that brought this up actually ;)

Seriously, anybody that thinks driving a <20 grand second hand BMW means they're a bona fide supercar owner needs to have their head checked. My whole point was "Don't throw stones in glass houses" - yes the Z4M is a great quick car, but don't kid yourself that it's the quickest car out there. As somebody else mentioned, a good driver in a 3.0 could destroy a bad driver in a Z4m.
