///M Warranty

As mentioned before this is what was quoted to me for Comprehensive cover, hope this helps other people:

Excess / Full BMW Emergency Service / Monthly Premium / Annual Premium
£0 / Y / £113 / £1236
£100 / Y / £100 / £1086
£250 / Y / £82 / £897
£0 / N / £104 / £1135
£100 / N / £90 / £984
£250 / N / £73 / £796

Cheers.

Sorry if you mentioned it previously, but what is the mileage on your car.

Those prices look to be about 25% more than the current prices.

I pay £56 per month for comprehensive, no emergency cover, £250 excess. Car has 26k on it. Those quotes seem too high.

in march i paid £870 - one payment - no excess, no home recovery (but you get away from home recovery foc, pay aa/rac for home start on the car only basis it is cheaper) this is the comprehensive plan. Your quotes seem really high, but maybe they have gone up recently or you are high mileage or an older car, mines a 56 plate 36k MR.

Interesting point - if you sell your car and do not sell to a private individual you cannot transfer the warranty to the dealer. You can cash it in as long as you have not claimed.

Wish i had realised this - had my warranty since march - one claim for two suspension coils today - approx cost £260 - cannot cash in, planning to probably part ex this weekend, as i have claimed i cannot get a refund (fair enough) which would have been around £400. what a pain, maybe it is a good reason to keep it until the warranty is about to run out (seem to be finding more and more reasons not to sell).

Would not be without the warranty, but this is because of £7k bills on my audi, maybe over cautious but great to have peace of mind.

My warranty will be up for renewal in November and given I've already had a decent amount of work done since last November I will definitely be renewing. For those that are interested thats:

2 x rear springs
1 x O2 sensor
1 x coil pack and spark plug
1 x rear sub

What's that - about £1k maybe?

I suspect I'll be selling during 2011, and since my car has no sat nav I'm going to need all the selling points I can get.

Ok chaps and chapesses I got my quotes today, just so you know as follows (all fully comp with no emergency cover)

Excess / Monthly Premium / Annual Premium
0/ 873 / 80
100/ 757 / 69
250 / 612 / 56

These quotes seem much closer to the prices previously mentioned than the OPs.

By way of comparison fully comp with emergency cover with £0 excess = £951

Quite interesting decision now. If I'm going to have cover what level excess should I take?

I'm guessing most of you favour the £0 excess so any problems you can get sorted without worrying about the initial costs? Ho hum I shall mull it over...

Strange - very strange - when I got a quote not so long ago they were much higher, and closer to the OPs.

It really does seem to vary wildly between cars. Does it take into account the options fitted?

tjlazer's quote appears the same as mine (£56 per month for comp with a £250 excess). I've been paying it for 17 months now and haven't had a claim. So I'm 'up' on the money I've saved so far :) But if I have two claims during the second year I'd be no better off. :(
'You pays your money....' Also, my paymets have not increased at all over the 17 months.

Weird. Maybe different prices for a coupe? Otherwise I've no idea. I've got all the options bar pro logic (hifi only) so I can't see it as being dependent on nav etc. It can't be location based if sammyz is getting the same as me in the london area.

Got my letter through today, here are the prices I've been quoted for reference to others, this is on a 56 Z4MC.

Comprehensive with Emergency Service:
£0 excess - £951 or £87 per month
£100 - £835 or £77
£250 - £690 or £64

Comprehensive without Service:
£0 - £873 or £80
£100 - £757 or £69
£250 - £612 or £56

Named Component with Emergency Service:
£0 excess - £798 or £73
£100 - £706 or 65
£250 - £590 or £54

Named Component without Service:
£0 - £720 or £66
£100 - £628 or £58
£250 - £512 or £47

Driveline with Emergency Service:
£0 excess - £623 or £57
£100 - £557 or £51
£250 - £474 or £44

Driveline without Service:
£0 - £545 or £50
£100 - £479 or £44
£250 - £396 or £36

Cheers

I went with Warranty Direct as BMW comprensive states that everything is covered except wear and tear items... What items do they deal wear and tear?? I have a feeling that they could use that as a get out clause.

WD on the other had covers W&T items.

I have (had) WD on the X5, and each claim had a get out clause so had to go against them hard.

The oil sump is covered by WD, but not the gasket. So when the gasket leaked, they said - not covered (until I blew my top).

Second claim: Pre heater control box. Unit is covered, labour to remove the manifold to get to the unit is NOT covered. Also, diagnosis cost was NOT covered so only got a couple of hundred back out of a 500 bill or so.

Also remember that for each 10k miles you have on the car, 10% of the total cost is deducted as well (on top of your own risk).

I suspect that a BMW warranty will give the least hassle on a claim. Mind I had Warranty Direct on an MGF and found them to be fine when I did claim for a starter motor. No hassle at all just paid up in full.

I cannot believe that people are debating about the cost of warranty and going on about how much you can save by putting the money in a "emergency pot"...

Imagine your front calipers seized solid as the dust seals have perished and let water corrode the pistons. Nothing scary, that's what your kitty is for. Thus you promptly go to BMW, buy two rebuild kits for £16+VAT each and then rebuild them yourself. Hmm, something is missing, ah yeah, pistons... After a day trawling the internet, you find someone who sells separate pistons, but he is in the USA. You order the kit for £100 for both front pistons, includin shipping, duty and VAT. Now you have to wait for the muppets from the Post Office to deliver it and charge more for a "handling fee". Damn, it is late December and it is quite cold and wet outside. Never mind, the kit is here after two weeks of waiting, you will just spend the whole day outside, with the car on jack stands, wheels, discs and calipers off. Damn again, you need compressed air to blow those pesky old pistons out of the calipes. You ain't got a compressor. Improvise, McGiver... Somehow let's assume that you have managed to rebuild the calipers somehow. Now you have just realised that the discs and the pads have gone too because of the excessive heat due to sticking calipers. Damn, damn and damn again. Hello, is that ECP? Yes, we have them in stock, that would be £300 + VAT for 2 discs and front pads. Yes, when can you deliver? You say that next day is another £15 extra? Ah, I see. You have everything finally. Never mind, that you have wasted a whole day of your weekend. You start putting it back together and you realise you need to bleed the brakes. Back on the phone to ECP for ATE Super Blue, and then to a mate - after all someone has to pump that pedal. Maybe on Sunday night you are done, full of great satisfaction that you have beaten the system... Until next time, when something more expensive goes pop!

BMW Comprehensive Insured Warranty - £80 per month with zero excess and no breakdown cover
Ability to drive the nuts off my car at 44k miles without having a care if it goes pop - priceless

Valid points, but I don't think anyone in support of the "emergency pot" is suggesting that you do it yourself - just that you may be better off by paying for work to be done as required.

I appreciate that it is a high end car, but how many times have the pistons seized destroying the pistons and seals on non tracked z4M? The cars are less than 5 years old. Are they really this unreliable?

In my experience it will almost always be cheaper to not pay for warranty. You are paying for peace of mind, that's why it is expensive.

Not to mention that in the case of perished seals, the warranty would not cover it anyway.
