M Vs Alpina

Ok So this may have been covered before...but a quick search hasn't shown up much...

Knowing that a certain blue Alpina is now floating around on the market, an interesting nagging thought has crossed my mind...

Here is the story, when I looked for my M, I also looked at the Alpina, but rather sadly I was swayed towards the M simply because I thought the Monaco blue was stunning, and there was one at the right price and condition...I figured, why get a silver or grey 2004 Alpina for a little less than a 06 M in the color I wanted and loved. (I have a thing for dark blue sports cars), plus isn't the M supposed to be the ultimate Z4??

So here is the thing, with a new house purchase, the old purse strings are being tightened...and this has got me thinking...How about an Alpina??

So I thinking slightly better fuel consumption, lower tax...Not sure on insurance. Oh and a bigger boot (the most annoying thing about the M, although the quad exhaust more than makes up for it! :-) )

But what is the real difference in terms of noise, performance??

Really be interested in what you guys have to say!

Sorry Chris, I misread your post and wrongly thought you were deciding between the 2 cars :oops:

If it means that you can stay in the fold then the Alpina isn't a bad choice to make :driving: :thumbsup:
 
I've not driven IMmie long enough to really get to know her, but I'm getting some good feelings. I put about 14K on #69 and loved all of them. My comment on the Garage Queen thread was that they are different tools for different jobs.

On a track, despite the performance on paper looking near identical, the M will win, albeit not by as big a margin as some would like. On a fast cruise, or in traffic, the Alpina wins hands down. It's much easier to live with in traffic. The steering is lighter, the clutch is lighter, the economy is better and the suspension isn't as hard. Long and the short of it is they're both great cars that suit different driving styles and usage. If I had the option I'd have both, but I don't. That said I don't regret changing either.

Your best bet is to test drive one and form your own opinion.

The problem is the head says get rid, but heart says keep her, and every time I go out in her the more I love her. However Monica (as she is lovingly known) was purchased at a time when there was plenty of money to spend, but now with a new house purchase and mortgage maybe its time to start listening to the head a bit. However a little research shows that realistically for a swop, or a swop and a very small amount of cash either way will only allow me to go for a higher milage cheaper Alpina, an not the beauty that first got me thinking Alpina. I have also considered going back to a 3L - But I don't feel I will ever get one with the spec of the M (Heated sports seats, M wheel, Nav, Cruise etc.) for a decent price...While we are on the subject of replacing...What would you get with say 10K - Must be convertible and fun to drive, with a decent amount of power and not crazy running costs!)

Stuart - I will wonder over to Coventry soonish and take a look at yours in the flesh as its only around 40mins away.

When I was contacted by the club regarding the 5th gear filming I rang the programme devisors they said my car did not fall into the category they were looking for I told them that another club member had an alpina and suggested a m v alpina test but I didnt think they sounded too interested.

rather the hard top for me but they are looking great value motor's right now :driving:
