///M top speed with limiter?

I have just read this online, does anyone agree that an ///M limiter isn't set at 155mph and will actually be closer to 165mph?

So much for the so called limiter cutting in at 155mph.
Are these cars m power cars limited to 155mph or not,as mine read 180mph the other week?

Most M models will reach a true 165mph before the limiter actually stops the fun (that was certainly the case with the E46 M3). This usually means a reading on the Speedometer of between 170 and 180 mph. This is different IIRC to non-M models that are limited more closely to the agreed 155mph point.

Depends on what gear you're in.

On all the ///Ms I've driven (e34, e39, e61, e46 CSL, e86) they've hit a soft limiter of about 157mph on the sat-nav ONLY in top gear.

In one gear below top they will happily go through that soft limit.

Soft limit is a indicated 157-160mph (to allow for speedo error & tyre circumference) - but only in top gear (6th in our case, 7th in the e61 M5). In the gear below top (i.e. 5th for us, 6th for e61 M5) they will happily smash through that soft limit.

Z4MC is just over 170mph on my sat-nav (me driving, someone else looking).

mmm-five, at 170mph did the car run out of revs in fifth - suggesting that more would available in sixth without the limiter, or run out of power - suggesting that really is the maximum achievable?...

...or did you run out of something at that point

Did you try changing up to sixth at that speed to see if the limiter would then kick in?

Assuming no limiter at all I think these cars would be capable of something between 171-175mph (true speed not the speedometer reading).

The M manual mentions the M-Driver package which was available in some countries (not sure if that included the UK). This raised, but did not remove, the electronic limiter to 171mph.

Surely if the limiter was lifted to 171 mph but the maximum attainable was only 171 mph anyway, it would have made the M-driver package more marketable if they had removed the limiter altogether and advertised it as such :?

BMWZ4MC - I'm guessing when I say 171-175. If it was only 171mph maybe they'd do it for political reasons - to say you've left a limiter intact rather removing it completely might look more socially responsible? :rofl: :fuelfire:

Only managed 170mph on the sat-nav, and it took quite a while to get there.

Put it in 6th and it gently slowed back down to 157mph - and no amount of forcing the pedal into the carpet helped.

I suppose a rechip would sort it, but why bother for the 1-2 times a year that you'd actually be able to use it.

BTW, the MPG read 8mpg (reset it once I started the high-speed runs), so you wouldn't want to do it for too long anyway - and it takes a fair amount of braking when you need to get back down to sub-100mph (that's aimed at you Mr Polish lorry driver on the A1 near Trier)

LOL, that video looks like it was taken in the Netherlands if I look at the layout of road/lines and matrix signs above the road. And you can count yourself lucky not getting cought at 160mph in the Netherlands.

Like others have said. MR does not hit the limiter in 5th. Have had 167 on the sat Nav and still gently accelerating. Have never had a oportunity to try a full speed run in 6th.

I have seen 165 mph in fifth with a passenger to confirm it in my M3 & it was still pulling, I don't understand why they quote they are limited when they aren't I don't really understand it.

Did an indicated 165 mph in the 3.0si on the autobahn last year - then needed to brake for a corner - didn't have GPS to double check, and put down the disparity from 155 'limit' to normal error on speedo.
