M Sport Springs thinner than standard! Really!

I'm having quite a problem finding the correct rear springs for my 3.0i

Tried typing spec and last 7 digits into RealOEM to get BMW part number only to find "no part available"

So called Suplex UK to find the correct Suplex Part and then the fun started. Gave the guy the reg number and the full VIN. His system also could not find a recommended rear spring and he explained in their catalogue a 3.0i could have standard OR M Sport. So he decided to look up the front springs and his system gave a "standard spring". But I have always thought my car had M sport suspension as it rides much lower than a 2.0, 2.2L etc. Also when I decode the last 7 digits of the VIN it comes up that I have "S704A M Sports Suspension".

Not to worry he says, could you take off the spring and measure them and he proceeded to give me the dimensions of the "standard" and "M Sport" his system said they were both 229mm long and 144mm diameter at the max point. He seamed surprised (so was I), so he checked the diameter of the spring coils (max as they taper) and told me the diameter of the M sport is 15.3mm and related to Suplex part number 06231. The diameter of the standard was 15.75mm and relates to Suplex 06231. I asked him to double check if I had these the right way round. He suggested that the lower ride height of the M sport suspension must be due to using "softer" springs that sit lower.

He went on to say suplex springs are identical to BMW OEM parts, they are made on the same production line, and half go to suplex and half to BMW. That is a big disappointment, I was looking to switch to Suplex in the hope they would last longer than OEM.

The guy was very helpful and spent an age on the phone with me, he said himself he had never had so many problems finding springs for a Z4.

Are you looking for a full set of springs ?

I'm about to purchase Suplex springs, 06231 are the correct M rear replacements for a 3.0i.

Thanks for the link, but I have fitted eibachs before and wouldn't do it again.

Interesting why you wouldn't . Seems a popular and overall good feedback for fitting them.

I fitted them to my mini two years / 30,000 miles ago and wished I hadn't. On the positives, the car looks much better (mini ride height is too high IMHO) and on a good road the handling is excellent. But on poor roads they are hellish hard and very uncomfortable, I live in the sticks and need to drive through 5 miles of country lanes to get to a B class road, local councils don't maintain country lanes very well. Most people who have been in my mini have commented that it is the most uncomfortable car they have been in. I don't want to risk having the same regrets on my Z4.

I appreciate there are many out there that have fitted them and love them (I work with a guy that have them on his Z4 and he loves them). I guess it comes down to where you live/types of road you drive on and how important comfort is.

I fitted some to my old Focus ST with 300 plus BHP and they were amazing I did fit a Whiteline rear arb upgrade too. Never had any issues with comfort and rode so much better than standard and yet seemed to control road handling with lots of front end torque and couldnt find much wrong with them at all . Enough for me to get some Eibachs for my car this morning.
Mini's dont have much travel for springs . I never found our old JCW R53 particularly nice and compliant to drive over the time we owned it. Never changed from standard the suspension just bucked and jumped around . Bit like my '61 mini I had even more moons ago, so BMW kept some of the old character in the newer versions :D

Don’t think anyone’s answered your question regarding thinner diameter for the lowered springs.

Interesting observation - Given it’s the damper + ARB (which is uprated for M sport) that controls sudden vertical movement, sounds plausible, as would sit lower.

Have u heard any more?

I have full set of Std Z4M springs for sale, on this forum, rears done under 4k miles, still got BMW paper labels on !!£65 for the lot

You are right!

I have done a little more research, on buycarparts.co.uk their springs section lists dimensions for some manufacturers. Suplex and Spidan (a GKN company) give identical measurements for rear "standard" and "m sport".

Spidan/Suplex standard springs:

Length: 229
Diameter across widest point of spring: 144
Coil (tapered steel rod) Diameter Max: 15.75
Coil (tapered steel rod) Diameter Min: 11.2

Spidan/Suplex m sport springs:

Length: 229
Diameter across widest point of spring: 139
Coil (tapered steel rod) Diameter Max: 15.3
Coil (tapered steel rod) Diameter Min: 11.2

This is consistent with what the guy from Suplex UK told me and suggests that the lower height of the M sport suspension does not come from shorter springs, but from thinner springs that allow the mass of the car compress them more.

It would be interesting to know how the failure rates compare between standard suspension springs and m suspension springs. Do m suspension springs fail at the same mileages on average, at lower mileages or higher mileages?

I would also be interested to know if Spidan and Suplex are made in same factory or just to the same spec because Spidan are a lot cheaper.

Great topic. We have one broken spring - drivers side rear - and trying to decide on a single standard replacement, or to replace both with the Suplex ones. Definitely don't want it lower, but would like it a bit more resistance to the enormous number of West of Scotland potholes!
