M Shifter and Boot Removal

Can someone who has replaced their shif knob tell me how they removed the boot - which is necessary on the M to unplug the illuminated shift knob.

I know the knob just yanks off and the boot snaps off. However, I don't want to damage the boot. Where do you pull on the boot to pop it off (don't want to rip it out of the base)? Or, does it pop off easy enough that this is a non-issue?

I believe you don't have to / want to remove the plastic piece surrounding the boot with the hazard light switch - but the boot itself will pop out without removing this piece, Correct?
 
Replaced it. Just an FYI for anyone doing this in the future... If your replacing the illuminated M shifter, you don't need to actually remove the boot to get to the electrical connector - the wiring from the car is long enough to just reach out of the boot. I was able to do it, and didn't have to disturb the boot.

Doing this though meant you had pulled the knob off without disconnecting which could result in damage to the wires.

Squeezing the frame at the sides you can remove the boot in seconds send unplug the connector to prevent the risk of damage.
