Spot the difference

Stevo is right about the stitching in the side and lower bolsters. The leather looks softer too. Is the M seat narrower I wonder?

Yea the stitching is totally different I wonder why they made them different. Make the M a bit different I guess but seems like something most people wouldnt even notice

Try the standard ones :(

I did have standard seats, god they were crap. Ripped them out and fitted Honda S2000 seats. Had them in a year or so and then replaced them with E89 M sport seats.

Sold the car last month and got an M

Well according to some, the M seats also have higher and better supporting bolsters.

I find it hard to get comfy for a long journey in many cars. Vauxhalls I find chronically bad. I personally find Zed Sports seats fantastic, on a long haul. I wood definitely try out any other seat before you swap them out.

The M Sport and M Seats are one and the same thing. Real OEM confirms this, check the various part number for yourselves. The only difference is the Nappa Leather covering that is standard on the M's and optional on the M Sports (bottom photo above). The M sports depending on model/options are either Half Cloth/half Oregon Leather, Full Oregon Leather (top photo above), or New England Leather which I suppose is somewhere between the two. Its also the leather they use when you have the two tone seats.

That's not possible as the foam inside is the same part.
So that's a /Mistake.

I agree on the M seats, they're not very good for long trips, I too find the backrest too flat / unsupportive. Baffling they don't even have adjustable lumbar! This would certainly help. And adjustable headrests.

The Recaro's (alcantara/leather) in my old Fiat Coupe were lightyears better, both for euro-trips and trackdays keeping things in place. Super ergonomical as always with Recaro's.

I've found tho, a set of these made things a LOT better, for my whole back. And you can take them off whenever you like. :)

I don't know if the backrest is too flat, but indeed they're not really comfortable to my back either. They;re pretty small (or I'm big), but they do hold you down in 1 place very well. And that's what theyre supposed to do. through the twisties ;)

What I don't understand is that some m sport seats have a perforated (or embossed) piece of leather in the backrest, and some (or rather most) dont. This is a picture from my seat:

It is original. So some cars have it, but I cant find a pattern in which cars have it. Mostly pre facelift, but also some facelift. I've seen it in black and red (and maybe others). I have new england black with the extended leather option.
There is (I think) also no mention in realOEM.

And sometimes you also see different seatbeltguides. I have the thick ones

I always thought that fabric inlay was known as the New England trim you mentioned GuidoK
As for the M seat comfort debacle ? Ive had them in a Si coupe & currently in M roady , find the comfort much better now but maybe thats the M suspension ?
The sport seats themselves by comparison to other similar vehicles are really poor imo
Aged TTs have seats that Z owners can only dream about from a comfort point of view , maybe not as tight between the bolsters for those who want to "rally"

I think the half leather was/is known as "active sports"
Never seen the perforated leather section before.
It would have been pretty cool if bmw had offered the whole of the centre base/backrest sections in perforated leather

No new england is the type of leather (softer, smooth). for the normal seats the new england leather has different stitching (a stitched strip in the middle, vertically over both seatparts), but for m sportseats I really don't know. The inlay is embossed leather btw, not fabric.

In the partslist there is an oregon black m sportseat cover, but I've never seen an m sportseat with different leather. Not the textured oregon leather at least (like it's common on the normal seats). It's always smooth soft leathe, all similar to the touch. My salesman (german bmw dealership) said that all m sportseats are always made with new england leather (or walknappa for the later ones in different colours). Maybe the oregon leather is 'just a name' on the m sportseats unlike the normal seats (where the oregon leather is different (textured, and a bit stiffer (thicker?)

I think the vast majority of m sport seats fitted to non m's are oregon, just like in the photo earlier in this thread. New england are just like GuidoK's with the exception that the perforated strip is non perforated leather meaning the new englands are the only leather to have 3 not 4 sections to the backrest.

Guido's seats are interesting. I wonder what is the main purpouse of those different seatbelt guide's.. For larger (american?) people?

Possibly an upgrade as I'm being cut by the seatbelt all the time.

The seatbelt guides are the same in size as the latter thinner ones afaik. Mine are 2 piece (so constructed of a back and front side) and the latter thinner ones are single piece.
I imagine cutting costs (less parts=less cost), maybe with a transition to a different supplier of plastic moldings. You see that all the time, different brand suppliers etc for sometimes (even to the eye) exact the same parts but different partnumbers from a specific date. That's usually a different supplier/subcontractor.

Here some more pre facelift seatbelt guide pictures from my seat
The function is obviously the same, they just look different.

I had a 2007 E86 si and now have a 2007 E86 M. The si had M sport seats which were identical with the exception of the ///M on the headrest to the ///M seats. Both were USA cars so they may be a difference from EU.

At first I thought they were a little uncomfortable, but acceptable. It took a really long time experimenting with different seat positions before I found one that is really comfortable. Using the 3 memory settings allowed trying different settings without loosing a good setting. Now I'm really happy with them, even being 6'1" tall.
