M/S or "Sport" button?

Sorry if this has already been asked (and I have had a quick search of the forums.)
I've had a quick search and can't see anything that tells me what the difference is between running my car in Sport + mode with the gear lever in the normal position, and in Sport + with the gear lever over to the left in M/S mode (left in S).

I haven't had my Z4 long (it's a 2007 E86 3.0si auto coupe).
Today I was having a play and tried first just pressing the sport button and using paddle shift and secondly also pushing the stick over to M/S.
Does pushing the stick over do basically the same thing as pressing the "S" button? Or the combination of pressing the sport button and pushing the gear stick over make any difference?
I think it was revving a lot higher between going through the gears but that might have been just me!
I'm quite new on this forum and any help appreciated.

On my auto, the sports button makes the engine the come alive. Can't say I have tried it in the LHS of the gearbox, to much fun in the auto mode

Today was the first time I properly tried it (now i'm more used to the car). Don't know which model audi it was, but he was right up the back of my car so I pressed the sports button and floored it.
He was still egging me on so I pulled over to the inside lane and then moved my gear shift over and floored it again using the paddle shift to move through the gears!!.. he then overtook me but I managed to keep up with him.
Most fun I had on an open straight road in ages!!

Putting the box into M/S makes the car essentially a "manual" auto (totally a thing) so the car will leave the changes more or less up to you (except where the revs drop too low)

Sport mode without M/S makes the throttle response quicker and (I think) steering a bit heavier, while in D the car will also gear a bit more aggressively

Personally I almost always drive the car in M/S with Sport on and TCS & DSC off.... its the best way to drive them :driving:

EDIT:
Also if you use the paddles without M/S mode on then the car will take over after several seconds and return the car to the auto SD mode

This is a friendly place with loads of sound advice and great banter too, some will disagree with that statement, but it is an open forum :)

Sorry but I'm going to hijack the thread a little. I'm trying to convince myself that rather than spend a large sun of money on redoing my roadster I should just buy a coupe. I just need to actually ride in one, preferably an auto as that's the one I'm looking at. I don't suppose anyone is somewhere near either Rochester or Dover and wouldn't mind giving me a ride?
