///M Running in service

My ///M's running in service was carried out at 1805 Mlles, it was a dealer demonstrator from Mill BMW near Newcastle, now Coopers.

I am pretty sure that I have read that the 1200 mile Running in service can be done upto 600 miles either way but for the life of me can't find it anywhere, may have been in a buyers guide iirc, it was beginning to bug me.

Anyway I was working in the North East on Tuesday so popped into Coopers for some advice, I spoke with David on the service desk for any information on my car that he may have and for confirmation about the running in service.

He confirmed that the car was a demo and that in 2007 the service figure was questioned by a prospective buyer for the used car warranty, they contacted BMW who said that the official figure is 500 miles either way of the 1200 but anything upto 2000 miles would be alright, they gave the warranty and David said that as long as my service history was upto date they could offer me the warranty too.

My last service at 36K was an oil service performed by an independent so I couldn't take him up even if I wanted to, quite happy not to actually as my Indy is a great place.

Just thought that I would share :)

Not so. BMW Warranty Services will sell you an extended warranty as long as the car has been serviced in accordance with BMW's recommendations, and using genuine parts and the correct grade of oil. The work does not have to be carried out by a BMW dealer.

This is true, but any service work whilst under BMW Extended Warranty has to be done at a Main Dealer.

Hold on - I'm not sure that is right - my understanding is that if you are using the BMW insured warranty from Mondial I think you must have all maintenance work carried out by an authorised BMW dealer. If your car is under a manufacturer or AUC warranty you can use a non-approved garage provided they use genuine BMW parts.

I think that's what was said - if you are under an AUC Warranty, you do not need to use dealer servicing. Equally, a car does not need to have a dealer service history in order to buy an Extended Warranty (either continuation or lapsed) for the first time.

However, once you buy an Extended Warranty, it is a requirement of the policy that any ongoing servicing is carried out by a BMW dealer.

(Of course, BMW are bad enough at refusing to pay for warranty repairs. I dread to think what they would be like on a car that had been serviced outside the dealer network. And how would you prove that it had been serviced exactly in accordance with BMW's requirements and used only genuine BMW parts?)
