M Running Costs

My total running costs (including mods) over the last 7 years and about 140,000 miles are available in my PistonHeads Garage.

.

If your depreciation is correct then your Coupe is currently worth 8k :? Makes me question the other figures. :(

Guys just wanted to say thanks for the feedback and info - it's really greatly appreciated. I've been flat out with work today and haven't had a chance to look on a computer and respond properly. Mmm-five thanks very much for the cost breakdown - particularly illuminating!

I think as soon as I've raised the capital I'll be taking the plunge - it seems like the only sensible thing to do ;)

Cornish Rob - is there any chance you fancy taking me out for a spin in yours sometime? :P

Would you pay more than £8k for a 150k mile Z4MC :poke:

I think I'm being realistic, but the lower it goes the less likely I'd ever get rid of it

My last attempt at WBAC was about £6700 - and the Vauxhaul/Ford PX price guide was only about £1k more.

As long as it remains economic to run, all I can say is ENJOY :driving: :D

Hi Ed, how's things?

So, thinking of getting rid of the coupe egh? You've done a lot of work to that so I hope you get your asking price. I won't admit jealousy but next time I see you and if you have the M you may sense it.

I wish I could afford to use an M as a daily but it just doesn't work out. I can bang up the mileage in the coupe and don't feel too bad. When me & Mrs roundozo decide to have kids I'll sell the coupe, buy a daily hack that the kids can be sick in and do random child related damage and get an M for the weekends!

Anyway I'm going off on one, sense the jealousy now? Good luck on the search buddy and of course when the day arrives I think I can say from all of us here on the forum, we need to see pictures within 2hrs of purchase. Yes I said two. You've been here long enough that you are no longer allowed the newbie 24 hr pic rule (this seems to be policed by RickRob). Good luck!!

How many miles have you done on the new engine ?

122000 - with oil changes every 6-7000 miles (3-4 months), and an inspection II in place of every Inspection I (every year).

My last inspection, a couple of weeks after I came back from the 'Ring, required 12 shims (3 the time before).

No worries mate, I'm sure we can arrange something. I'm just up the A3 a bit.

I think I might have to sell it at some point, but in no rush as I need a bigger car really. Don't want to sell it though. Thinking about a Discovery 4, so being the winter, it's the worst time to sell a sports car, and the worst time to buy a Land Rover.

This makes for some nice reading. Glad to hear you're changing to an ///M Ed, even if it's one of those silly enclosed ones!
I'm sure you'll love it and under the heading of 'you only live once, life is short' etc etc, it would be silly not to have one :)

In your £2k a year are you including insurance/tax?

Personally if you put aside 1k a year and had the option of more should the worst happen (ie you have a good financial standing and arent struggling to own the car..) I think you'll be absolutely fine.

Most of your money will go on tyres, brakes and servicing. I can't say i track too closely how much i spend on it, i have a very much 'whatever it needs it gets' attitude to maintaining mine, but i suspect ignoring tax/insurance i've spent under £4k for 3 years of motoring and that includes a hefty labour bill for swapping cam followers.

Avoiding the bill for an Insp2 is probably a good idea, however in my experience having it done before i bought the car led to aforementioned hefty bill... so for me, ensuring mine already had Insp2 and avoiding the cost actually led to a huge hidden cost.. go figure.

Do you know what happened to your cam followers then? Is this a common problem?

Bit late to start flapping now mate

It is a worry. My car had new cams and followers 10K miles ago, the previous owner doesn't know why they went.

Probably due to there being no definitive yes or no as to why or when these engines go bad

Lots available to read on the subject briefly summarised ( from my own perspective )

Treating the car kindly until thoroughly warmed is a given
More frequent oil changes than manufacturer suggests ( use oil that has a good cold viscosity qualities )
If tracking then do so with clean oil & be very wary of running the car very hard when very hot
& of course pay heed to when & who does the valve clearance checks & adjustments

I've never had a car that needs valve clearance adjustments before. But yes, I always drive my cars very carefully before they're warm and replace the oil regularly when tracked. Although looking into it I worked out that technically I could do 60 track days in the VX220 between oil changes if I followed the oil manufactures advice :o

Cam follower wear/big end wear/HG failure are all signs of hard abuse from cold. It's unfortunate but there are a significant proportion of people who would not have known or cared how to treat a car properly when these cars were purchased from new, hence the issues - I reckon anyway!
