M Roadster Tyre Problem - Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2

Mixing tyres is not ideal. The Goodyears have softer sidewalls than the Continentals this will explain some of the feeling apart from the newness wearing off. Put some Goodyears on the front to balance it up.

Thanks.

You have hit the nail on the head I think, it does feel very much like the Goodyears have significantly softer side walls compared to the M3's which were on there previously.

I have heard that mixing tyres on different axles can be bad but never actually experienced it as shocking as this before.

On my E92 335i, I took the car off runflats and did the backs first. When the car was running a mixed set up it did feel "unmatched" somehow and you could feel the different reactions on each axle but it never felt dangerous like the Zed does now.

I am still concerned that one or both of the tyres may be defective as I bought them through e-bay. They could well have a "suspect" history. For all I know they could have been found to be defective, returned and then somehow found their way back to market again - they were quite cheap.

I will keep an open mind for the time being but I am currently acutely aware of the importance of brand new tyres from a reputable source.

So, I have ordered a full set of Michelin PSS's via Camskill.

£700 which is quite painful but not too bad considering.

Will stick the Goodyears on the bay in a few weeks.

Thank you all for the help and advice.

I'm also thinking of changing to Michelin, cheap at Costco

They are PS3's, not the Pilot Super Sports but that is an absolutely AMAZING price!

I ordered a set of Pilot Super Sports from Camskill and it came to £720 including delivery. I then have to pay £40 for fitting so £760 all in. :o

Those PS3's at Costco you sent, I could have had fitted for £200 less. . . they are a really good deal.

I have not driven a car with both typres of tyre on but if looking at reviews and driver feedback, the PSS are supposed to be better.

The PS3 is still a good tyre though and at that Costco price, looks like excellent value.

I have just realised however that the Costco sizes you have shown are not the OE size. The profile dimension is 5 smaller front and rear.

Sounds like the tyres have slightly different diameters, hence the pulling one way under acceleration. The diff will do weird things if this is the case.

Do the tyres have the same model code? Were there any model specific oem issue versions of this tyre for specific cars? This used to be a common problem with the honda s2000 as they had their own version of the s02, as did a Porsche and even though the tyre size codes were the same they were actually different sizes.

I have the 224's on my 3.0Si, they rub on the fronts when full lock in reverse, the sizes in the pictures are what we're on the MV2 alloys when I bought the car, so I thought if I revert back to these sizes it will eliminate the rubbing...

I still have the conti M3's on the 224's and I'm off to costco tomorrow so I'll have a look at the cost and post here.

I checked the tread depth today and across the tread, one is 7MM, the other 6MM - WTF. They turned up looking new with chalk marks round them.

Do ALL makes of new tyre have 8MM tread? Even with the M LSD, I am surprised that this small margin of difference would make the car pull over the road under power but it seems it does.

Not sure on the model code, I will check tomorrow but as said previously they are a year apart in date of manufacture. :o

Earlier today I spoke with a knowledgeable chap at a tyre place I have used many times before (Micheldever Tyres):

The load rating on my Goodyears is 99. This is apparently the OEM Mercedes figment and means they have a different sidewall loading than the car is set up for and the OE Conti M3's on the front.

He said they have seen before on performance cars, a non uniform load rating on front and rear axles throwing the car out of kilter as the axles are then reacting to the road at different rates.

He gave an example of their experiences with the 1M being extremely sensitive to tyres. They have fitted a few well known brands and models of rubber for owners to return a couple of days later saying the car feels dangerous and to change all the tyres over. He is of the opinion that some cars are set up to tight margins.

He suggested that I either get some Goodyear 99 load ratings for the front to match it all up or better, change all the tyres to something more suitable.

It seems that what are to most people minor details on tyres can really screw some cars up. I have never experienced tyres making a car feel so bad, you live and learn I guess.

A sincere thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread. There are some very knowledgeable chaps on this forum.

I hope the information in this thread helps others.

Hmm,
As other's have said, something is seriously wrong with them. Myself and a friend also with a Z4M have been running them for a while now, absolutely fantastic tyres.

Should be more stable if anything. Pretty cheap too.

The PS3 is the replacement for the 'touring' Pilot Exalto tyre.

The PSS is the replacement for the 'performance' Pilot Sport 2 tyre.

Are the PS3's any good for the Z?

Just to update this thread, I have Michelin Pilot Super Sports all round in the OEM sizes and have now done around 500 miles.

Turn in and the amount of steering feedback is now much, much better. The issues relating to stability at speed, stability and control during hard acceleration, etc are all gone.

The dry grip on these things is incredible and the wet grip seems to be very impressive too.

When it does give, it breaks away in a pretty progressive and controlled manner.

The car is transformed and I am very happy with how the car is now.

Sniffer - that's good news!

I am about to match my front and rear axles on the Vredesteins to see if my issues (almost identical to yours) go away!
