Yes but just because there isn't an appetite to deal with an issue doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The inconvenience and hassle caused by the activities I've mentioned will be borne by individuals and not by the organisations of the type you've mentioned. If the issue doesn't cost car dealerships or Autotrader any financial loss then they are unlikely to take it into consideration. The vast majority of people will not become victims by openly displaying their number plates but some will. Why take the risk?
I promise you I didn't invent the scenarios outlined and there is a 'real' issue to be considered here. I think your argument may be that the likeliehood of the open display of your registration plate causing problems is small enough for you to have no concern is so doing. That's a matter for your own judgement but personally I'll continue to obscure mine.
