M max speed and vs Alpina B3S Biturbo

Hi there I am a new member to the forum. I bought my saphire black M Coupe in February, quit my job in June and had an awesome summer racking up the miles. Not enjoying London driving though. I also managed to get two racing bikes in the boot with luggage for a cycle tour in Cornwall!

My M is unlimited and I clocked 170mph. What speed can she reach and what are the Conti Sports capable of handling?

Also a friend had an Alpina B3S for a 24hour test drive the other night and so we took them both out. Almost identical performance up to 150mph and cornering big curves and small roundabouts. Being an automatic and more comfortable you couldn't get a bigger difference between the two although the B3 is a little unstable over 120! We both prefered the M for driving but the Alpina is more of a commuting car.

Hello, and welcome!

Sounds like a lovely car, lots of M coupe owners on here! As is customary, we have to ask - where are the pics?! :)
re: your post - no idea what an unlimited M will max out at... what is the rating on your tyres? It should be on the sidewall - if they're standard, one of the M owners will be along to let us know!

I don't have the jacobs to go over 120 on UK roads, and even then I'd only ever hit 120 for a short burst - usually cruising along at a maximum of 100 on motorways... (at one point in my early driving history I had 9 points, was pretty close to a ban - don't want to be in that position again!) where did you do 170?!

I think anyone who takes cars out on public roads, boasts of 150mph, in theirs and a demo car and posts it on a forum, is an idiot and danger to himself and others.

Do it on a track or unrestricted autobahn and I'd be interested.

There is an old airfield near my friends house that we go to to test cars for speed and cornering. They do some gliding there so the tarmac is in good nick, not sure where as it is half an hour through lanes near his house in the country!

We weren't clocking those speeds on public roads, I haven't seen any UK road surface that can handle 120 comfortably let alone 150, I hate to think with the recession what it will be like after this winter :(

+1, hopefully this was on a track :poke:

Edit: Just seen the post above.

Then on a closed airfield it sounds like a lot of fun and interesting to do

Do let us know of the location as I'm sure many would like to take advantage of such a place.

The police in Telford could point some out to us no doubt. They liked to use the public highways to test drive their cars.
What was it? 150 on the M54 and 90 in a 30?

Mine is limited as far as I know and was on the stops at a touch over 170mph clock speed coming back up the Autobahn from the Ring this year. Not sure how fast it would go but had another couple of thousand rpm left. Had an unbroken run of 15 minutes at 160mph with the VXR8 who was on the trip which was great. It's strange to be able to cover 40 miles in 15 minutes in a car :D

Was the B3S the E46 version? Well would have though its the E90, as the E46 is a lot slower than the Z4M.

And how was she at 170mph?

It was the E90 Alpina. It is very strange the feel of the two cars when so evenly matched on performance!

Not sure where the airield is, it's about half an hour warm up drive through country roads from Bath. A couple of years ago we saw a Diablo leaving the strip!

It was always my understanding that the 155mph limiter on BMWs is a tad "vague" - that its common to see an indicated 165+ on the clock even in a car with the limiter in place? I've got zilch interest in top speed, unless I take the Z4 into Germany that is. Well, if you're there it'd be rude not to...

(I have my doubts about the 3.0i actually reaching 155mph though - surely 231ps isn't enough for that?)

Anyone who makes silly assumptions without knowing the full facts is an idiot and danger to general forum chit-chat in my book :D

I'm sure it would with the roof up. My 225 bhp TT coupe would hit 157mph according to TomTom, reading over 160 on the clock.
