M market watch

I'm sure there will be a buyer willing to pay a premium for a low-miles example. But this is a small niche within a small niche, so you'll need patience.

I paid a premium for a lesser miles MC (but higher price) so there is a market. Just very small as the car hasn’t caught the eye of the serious collector yet. Super low miles cars will sell but you can’t use them….. mine has 31000 which I thought was a good compromise

Thanks for the feedback guys, appreciate it, and noted on the small pool of potential buyers and having patience.

A point that was a bit of a shock to me when setting the price was recent inflation. Todays prices on AT initially seem strong money however when accounting for inflation over ~2 years, then they seem far more 'reasonable'.

As you say, the market is there for lower milage examples (you were one for your MC, and myself looking for a sub 40 mile MR), might just take a while.

Thanks again!

Best regards

Mike

Could consider selling via the likes of Collecting Cars and Bonhams which have the right target audience. Just be prepared to stand firm when they try to talk you into a low reserve.

The tax and insurance has killed these cars.

Driving as a hobby is becoming a thing of the past.

I don’t think that is strictly the case - hobby driving is a thing of the past - certainly it’s worse - no empty roads, stupid speed limits, mamils, etc but it’s not over. I go to Spain and yes I do get the occasional 150 euro fine but the roads are largely empty. And I dont need to go 140 miles an hour any more. On costs yes tax is steep but if it’s a hobby car then it’s likely only to be taxed 5/12. And insurance is classic now not mainstream. And compared to Ferraris it’s still very cheap and I haven’t seen the bottom fall out of that market. Okay big Astons have fallen off a cliff in price so I agree prices will continue to soften but not to nothing

The insurance is dirt cheap compared to most modern stuff, I find anyway.

The tax is annoying, just like an unexpected parking ticket. But it's not a significant cost compared to depreciation. Even the MPG isn't bad or servicing from a specialist. The Ms are still a bargain for such an intoxicating package. Just look how much anything JDM and interesting is!

Agree with the above. I am 57 and my insurance for my Z4M on a 5000 a year policy only cost me £260 for the year.
Regarding the cost of ownership over a twelve months is very cheap if this is your hobby. I used to clay shoot competitively a few years ago and i recon the cost over a twelve month period was about £7000.
I have always been into cars and like above has been stated these are an extremely cheap cars (essentially an E46 M3 CSL without the carbon induction) and we all know how much these cost. For what they are they don't look out of place next to more expensive cars.
I have just completed the NC500 with a Ferrari 296 GTB, Aston Martin DB11,Porsche Cayman S and when we had our stops the Z was still getting attention. ABSOLUTE BARGAIN.

Hi everyone,

Hoping for some advice on selling my Z4MR, advert is in the for sale section and AutoTrader link here:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202309232287620

Appreciate its coming into winter and not the best time to sell a convertible, however just looking for feedback on the advert and really if I'm asking (hoping?) too much for it?

I've got a separate daily so after its MOT in ~2 weeks the car is being taken off the road and on trickle charge for winter.

Any comments welcome.

Best regards

Mike

Lovely ///MR Without the boot spoiler I might be tempted back. Worth including a few pictures of the engine with these car. It is a thing of beauty and shines up a treat.

Market's dead for the roadster - everyone's chasing the coupe and your price is right in Z4MC territory.

On top of that and despite the low mileage everyone wants am ///M that has had the rod bearings replaced - they also want to see an annual service record and the location will put a lot of buyers off.

In terms of price I don't think your to far off - the standard insurance valuation is always miles out on these cars but on that mileage the trade price is £16,750 and the retail price is £18,370. GLWTS

Also I meant to add and reiterate the point made above - a photo of the S54 block is obligatory on any listing of the Z4M

Not being funny. It is a niche car to start with and having mods, especially visual mods, makes it more niche and therefore slightly harder to find a buyer.

It hasn't happened to me yet - I'm still loving my M. :D

Just not the Road Tax.

Noted on the missing pics under the bonnet, will get some this weekend and include in the advert. Used to have a 147 GTA and the Busso was an absolute thing of beauty when polished up!

Regarding the spoiler / visual mods. I'm not sure how hard it would be to remove? Came with the car originally and while wasn't my favourite design, didn't ever look into removing it. Anyone know if they are drilled/screwed on or is it just 3M (etc) tape? The front Zunsport grill is a 2 min job to remove, so could be reverted to standard very quickly.

As you say though taz, peoples opinions differ so will likely leave it on.

Thanks again for everyone's comments, this forum was a big part in having two of these over the years. Huge source of info, how tos, discussions, the market place and just a generally helpful bunch which made ownership so easy so thanks!

It is a pain but if you can afford to have both types of Z4 im sure insurance and tax is a minor inconvenience

Lol I can't afford them that's why they don't get used. I need to sell the M, it's my retirement plan.

I'm thinking next year I will mot it then put it up for sale

Sell them both and buy an Alpina Roadster S - cheap road tax, rare and holding their money

Been lurking around on here a fair bit since buying my Roadster earlier this year - Yes., the coupes are what everyone talks about but I'd massively disagree with:

Roadsters in general are more popular here in the UK than nearly anywhere else, and for many people (myself included) a Coupe is simply missing the point of a 'toy' car. The E85 doesnt even suffer from the one thing that the proponents of the 'coupes are stiffer' brag about - they are very stiff and dont really scuttle shake (certainly better then a 986 Boxster!).

I've worked professionally on vehicle chassis design systems and dynamics, I like the odd trackday, I'm all about handling and feel (check my history of cars, its always been about the chassis not the power) but I'd still say that the ability to drop the roof on a 2 seat sports car trumps any last fraction of a %age in torsional rigidity or reduced lap time of a coupe.

It will always be each to their own, but its simply not true to claim that no one wants a Roadster. Timing is your biggest issue - they just arent wanting them now!
I've owned tens of open top/roadster/sports type cars an the market for all of them is very, very seasonal. If at all you can wait till March/April, then I would reccomend it.

And all photos sohuld have the roof off other than one to show the hood condition. And if the roof is down, the windows should be down. Sell the dream! :D
