M - Inspection 2 Invoice / Job Sheet

Who knows Gaz,

The lad who owned it before me worked at this dealership so I might drop him a mail to see if he knows what was done.

Worst case I bring the Inspection I forward and write a list of everything I want doing.

Aye....

Its so hard to say if they have or havent been done...

To me,the lack of any replacement gaskets and crush washers for the job speaks volumes.

Hi Dan

Here is the invoice from my Insp2 @ Peter Van Der Veer. The diff seals were due to a small leak I had.

Cheers Austin

Does it feel / sound any different after all that?

Just to write "check valve clearances" on an invoice doesnt mean they have actually done it though.
It would be better if they supplied actual measurements for each valve for you to see for yourself.
After all if they are doing it they would probably be writing the sizes down anyway.

Agree with this and something I will ask for with its next inspection.

THIS.....

To be honest, I don't think it's really necessary to write down all the shim measurements when doing it-you rattle through them and when you find one that's out, measure, then just go up or down. When you're working to a clock it's a waste of time to pull out a shim that you know immediately is in-spec, measure it, write it down then re-install. Repeat x24.

That said, if I was an indie I'd make sure I wrote down the info of the ones changed and ticked off those that were ok just to give a bit of evidence that it had been done, so perhaps this is something we need to push for come inspection time.

I thought they wrote down the clearance gap, not the shim size used to get to the clearance spec.

So there is no reason they can't spend 10 seconds recording it after the measurement.

you need those measurements after they have been done, otherwise you have Zero assurance that they've actually been done properly. For example they could be loose but in spec, seeing such info allows you to query things, and have an actual understanding of your engine and what its doing for the future.

Not significantly different Dan. Maybe a little smoother on the power going down but that was probably due to the diff leak. Maybe a little bit quieter from the engine.

Car wasn't due an Insp2, (28k miles) just wanted price of mind and its now 8yrs old.

Good point, I must have been having a blonde moment! You're right, it wouldn't take much to write down the approximate gap though I can imagine some doing it are quite happy with the fact it's in the range regardless of whereabouts it falls.

A cynic would say that they offer you a set of measurement which makes you happy, but how do you know they are for your car?

Only way to know for sure is you have either seen them checking, or have done yourself.

I will be looking for an inspection 1 soon and want proof the valve checks are done.
I guess the garage could take a couple of pics while doing the valve checks and email them over.
That would be reassuring :)

I'm going to insist on watching them do mine.

I'll take my folding fishing seat and good magazine. They can shout me when ready

That's the thing. If they are willing to lie to you that they have been checked, all bets are off. It may help...

You can only do so much. I checked that the rocker cover bolts on mine had been moved, FWIW! There are some warning signs though, particularly if they don't keep the car overnight to check them cold.

I didn't get measurements for mine. But I did get a hand-written sheet telling me which cylinders/valves needed shims and how many. Seems from my invoice that the gaskets and seals were done though. And the engine sounds completely different than before it was serviced at idle - much quieter. Hardly surprising though, as it needed 14 shims...

And to agree with the above, if they don't ask for the car to be dropped off the day before then it's a good bet that they don't know what they're doing. At least not sufficiently to trust with your car.
