How are they attached, washed the car lastnight and one of them is loose. cant feel any fixings around it? does it clip or screw?

from what i remember when i had my front end off to laminex the headlights, there are a couple of retaining screws and push fit plugs. heres the links for the front bumper and front wheel arch liners below, showing how they are attached. hope this helps bud

from looking at the diagram, if i remember rightly, the brake duct attaches to the cover (part 6 on the diagram) which is attached to the wheel arch liner. the brake duct then just sits in the trim panel on the front bumper

thats what i thought Rye from looking at it. It appears attached to the arch liner ok, and is in place where it should be, however, there is movement in it where there isnt on the other side one..... hmm, perhaps the arch liner needs checking to see if it should be pushed further toward the front.

Where is the movement coming from? if there is a gap from where the brake duct should meet the bumper then i would think you are right about the arch liner not being secure. but if the arch liner is in place and not loose then i think you're probably just missing a retaining screw somewhere holding it onto that cover plate

they clip into metal bracket..... They are a bitch get to lined and keep in position however, took me ages to get my right.....

WHS^

They are a very poor design. There's a sort of "rawlplug" type of fitting which is part of the entire duct moulding which gets damaged if they've been removed and may even break off. This has to fit through a hole in a metal bracket. One of mine has broken off so I've drilled a hole through the duct where this fitting is located and I've used a countersunk screw and screwed it into a rawlplug which I've put through the hole in the metal bracket. I had to remove the wheel arch liner to do this and a very short screwdriver inside the duct. It's a lot off effort for something which should be relatively simple to do. I give BMW 1/10 for this.

might have a go when im really bored, which bit is the moulded fitting on? top/middle/bottom/left/right? the diagrams on realoem dont seem to show the moulding?

One if my brake ducts also broke when it clips to the bracket... When my front bumper hit a curb.

The bodyshop had to do the same with a screw.

The part is Number 18 in the diagram and the "rawlplug"-like fitting should stick up in a centralish position on the upper surface

Both of mine have a sort of spring loaded movement. With them being the same, I assumed this is how they were designed to be.

Should they both be fixed solid with no movement at all?

One of mine was broken and rattled around a little, so I took it off (had to remove the wheel arch liner) and drilled a hole through it. I used a plastic push rivet to secure it.

Alhough it wasn't that price, it was about $1 from the local store.

Pain in the ass to do!

well, finally got around to inspecting this today.

yes, there is a small plastic plate on top of the brake duct with a rawl fixing on it. the small plastic plate on mine is detached from the duct. i think ive got some adhesive i can use to fix this as the rawl plug and flat surface are hanging there for me to bond the duct back onto... :)

some strangely poor design/material choices on this car in some areas..... the low rent steering wheel spoke covers with the soft feel covering that marks/peels off are another personal gripe.....

My left hand duct was flapping around the first time I washed the M after purchasing from BMW (good old AUC squillion point checks ;)). From the outside its not at all obvious how they wedge in, certainly wasn't anything in the arch worth tightening or replacing.

Apparently it was a bumper off job and replacement of the duct itself to resolve (and a new washer jet cover which got broke during the job...).

+1 :x :headbang: thiat brake duct is a pain in the butt. mine detatched at high speed once see thread:

that metal braket inside the front bumper that holds the top plastic pin of the brake caliper does move easily so if youo've even lightly pranged your front bumper I sujest you check your brake ducts are still fiting snug.
