Its for IR remote function for the likes of garage door opener.

Red has it, grey doesnt.

If the full remote function is fitted there are 3 buttons on the mirror i think. Red lens is just a by product, same as people having footwell wiring but not the lights fitted.
 
Mine's for the tractor beam to help (usually not very successfully) reel in those pesky GT3s/R8s/E9x M3s/Ring Rental Cars at the 'Ring :P

On the auto-dim fitted mirror, the clown nose is just a led light, no sensor. It's a visual theft deterrent, thats all. The mirror holds the ultrasonic receivers (not IR) for central locking, alarm and Homelink if fitted (3 buttons under mirror).

BTW mines a 2002 Z4 and the clowns nose is red.
