Red on IL blue ///MC, red on black E46. Perhaps it's red on coupes, grey on roadsters. I think it's the sensor for the autodiming mirrors, so perhaps it relates to ambient UV levels which would tend to be higher in a roadster. Maybe your survey answer stems should be further broken down into coupe vs roadster?

Light levels must te the same with roof up though, could even be darker in a roadster. Fair to say though my auto lights are on a lot when the roof is down though even when it bright sunshine.
 
I have just had a thought. My Z4 has auto wipers, and auto dim mirror.

My E46 3 series didnt have either of these options. Could it be connected with that?

I agree, but it may be something to do with the markedly higher light levels when the roof is down that requires grey not red in roadsters - perhaps to prevent the mirror misbehaving in direct sunlight or the sensor being damaged by the same :? The response of a grey sensor when the roof is up (when conditions are like that in the coupe) might just be an accepted compromise. If anyone has had an E46 convertible it would be interesting to know what colour the sensor was.

(Or we could all just get a life at 2030h on a Saturday night!)

My ///M is auto everything and has a red sensor, my E46 has autodimming mirror but not wipers and is red...
 
I thought the light sensor was on the back of the mirror, isn't this just a alarm warning indicator.
