The fangs tend to catch on speed bumps and steeply sloping kerbs at drive entrances etc which results in damage to the plastic of the bumper. The fang protectors or skid plates act as a sacrificial part that takes the brunt of any impact. They have the advantage of tending to skid over kerbs too, rather than catching.
These photographs show mine. Originally black, but now minus a little paint after years of selflessly protecting the bumper, they are the thin metal plates attached to the underside of the fangs:
