Fully knowing i am in for ridicule :roll: ........If its got M badges on it is it an M..... (unless you stuck them on youself and that doesn't count)

We have a 2.0 sports, it has M steering wheel, seats, suspension etc but i know its not a real M. :cry:
Yes i know its 2 cylinders and a 1k+ short on cc but why do they then bother putting the badges on. Is it faster than a SE!!!.

Just thought i would ask the wise and the wonderful thier opinion. :?
 
Simple answer NO.

BMW have made a rod for their own back by cashing in on the 'M' range.

For most of their current limp range BMW try to spice it up by offering 'M' versions. Which at the end of the day are nothing more than cosmetic styling exercises.
 
Its purely marketing. They call the sport model the M-sport in the same way Audi calls theirs S-line.

Its been happening for ages. My 20 year old E34 Sport has 'M' steering wheel and gear lever.
 
Although Mercedes only uses "Sport" for its sporty models, AMG alloy wheels and bodystyling are optional.
 
As above NO my Z has M.Seats and suspension plus i want to fit an M wheel but she is still a 3.0 SE
 
Thats what i though. No M engine then its not an M,

I think however that they should put the 'M' seats in as standard in all the styles as they are much better than the basic. Its ok to charge extra for stereo sat nav equipment etc and espcially the power units, areas where there is a real difference, but not what should be basic fitting suspension etc.

I still love mine for what she is though :D

Which brings us onto the next question. If the 1 series M only has a slightly tuned up engine that's currently in the rest of the BMW range, is it really an M ? M cars usually have more special engines

Exactly, more watering down of the breed from the increasingly uninspiring BMW marketing department.

An M car is a vehicle put together by the M division....I don't think it matters whether the engine is specific to the car or not. If the M bods have had their say on components, drivetrain, track, camber etc and have set it up their way, I consider it an M car. The M535i was an M car before the M5, for example
 
There is a 2.0 roadster kicking about Dumbarton with an M badge on the back but he still has the 2.0 badges on the sides :oops: for him TBH

I'll need to dig out the photo on the M8 of the "M" hatchback I saw (the one before the 1 series(cannae for the life of me remember what it was called now) was a diesel too :rofl:
 
I seen a 2.0 3 series (single oval exhaust) with a 335 badge and M badge on the back!

I find it amusing... along with the GTI and Typre R badges... if people didnt want them then it would put a lot of eBay sellers out of business!!

I mean those people who really understand what these badges signify would also know how to spot a fake!

A Compact? I've certainly seen one of them around Glasgow with an M-badge in the past too - just wrong :rofl:

The engine on an M car is only part of the story. Check the spec of the new 1 Series M and you will see that the running gear is different to the norm also. It has the M3's rear diff/axle for starters.
