M Coupe Ownership 1 Month In

I've now had the pleasure of owning my M Coupe for 4 weeks now in which time I've covered 1,000 very happy miles.

As a long-time previous Zed owner I thought I'd post some thoughts on the new car (compared to the old) and my likes and dislikes of the Coupe so far.

Likes

1. Engine - well the engine has to be the first on the list. It dominates the M experience doesn't it? Tremendous noise and power and also good refinement for those times when you don't want to push on. It's also very strong in the gears despite the (relatively) low 269lb ft or torque. I very rarely rev the car beyond 5k revs but there is enough pace and aural pleasure at those revs to make it satisfying enough. The way the car just continues to build speed well into three figures is just awesome and is the major difference between the M and my old 3.0i. I remember a 0-100-0 test of my old car in Autocar when they figured the 231BHP 3.0i version at 5.7 to 60 but 15.8 to 100 and I was bit disappointed with that. It did seem to run out of steam a bit after 80mph. Not in the M though - it's still pulling like a train at 130mph and is 7 seconds quicker to 130 than the 3.0i (260 odd BHP) coupe. Autocar got it spot on when reviewing the M "this engine serves urge whatever the revs, though its at the upper end of its juicy 8000 rpm rev range that the most thrilling work occurs. That's where the soundtrack crescendos and the engine, sometimes whiny in the mid-range, comes over all hard edged and ferocious. And it's at this moment you know what you've paid for."
2. Grip - the grip is incredible. God knows how much welly you have to give this thing to get it to let go and they way it lowers when you plant the throttle on the exit of a corner I just love ! You can really feel the extra stiffness over the roadster which sometimes left me with a "will it or won't it" feeling as I went into a high-speed corner.
3. Steering - the hydraulic system is a big improvement over the electronic system in my old car and the car is much easier to point where you want it to go. It isn't quite as good as it could be though as anyone who has driven a Cayman S will testify. I am mystified though at why the "thick" steering wheel comes in for so much criticism in the motoring press. I love it !
4. Ride - surprisingly i find it much better than my old Zed (which had non RFT Dunlop SP9000's on it). It isn't perfect and on bumpy roads at speed can get a bit too "bouncy" but day-to-day its a more comfortable ride than my old car which I wasn't expecting. Maybe it is the slightly taller side walls (45 vs 40 on the front and 40 vs 35 on the rear).
5. Looks - it's a real head turner and I love my colour combo too. I wasn't searching for midnight blue and champagne particularly, I had an open mind but glad I chose it now. I've been surprised at how many people have noticed it and you can tell they are thinking/saying "oh that's one of those Z4M coupes.....you don't see many of them". It looks like a mini supercar IMO.
6. Economy - again pleased with the 22.0 MPG I've averaged so far which is based on majority urban.
7. Sport button - hilarious ! the sport button on my old car didn't seem to do much other than improve the steering weight at high speed. I certainly never really noticed the so called sharper throttle response. But on this car.....my god its almost comical in town !

Dislikes (which although quite large in number are only minor niggles !!!)

1. Stereo - I've got the Logic 7 but in the relatively little time I've had to play about with it the sound still sounds tinny and poor. Maybe I just need to play around with the various settings a bit more.
2. Voice control - seems pointless and is pretty user un-friendly IMO.
3. Bluetooth - connected my Nokia 3720 classic up straightaway but only about 8 address book names. I'm getting an HTC soon and apparently they work quite well with the BMW bluetooth so hopefully that will improve things.
4. Rear parcel shelf - because its just a fairly flimsy cover I find that when you have anything in the boot you can hear it moving about/clonking whilst you're driving which I find annoying. Surely they could have insulated the driver from this a bit more effectively.
5. Build Quality - Interesting that on the new E89 Z4 (which I've driven twice in 35i guise) that the interior and overall build quality is light years head of mine (as is the new 5-series or 5-series GT). For a car which cost its original owner nearly £50k it is nowhere near good enough. Like most BMW's it has some orange peel paint (the 09 325d M sport coupe the dealership lent me whilst I was waiting for my car also suffered from it). The interior plastics are cheap in places and the switchgear also not of the required quality. There are also odd squeaks and rattles but thankfully nothing really annoying. I find it strange that the facelift interior was no better than my pre-facelift Z4 Roadster's.

All in all though I absolutely adore the car. I cannot wait in the mornings to start the engine, listen to that burble on idle on a cold morning and get in and drive it. It puts a smile on my face everyday which in the year after a divorce is quite an important characteristic ! Hopefully by christmas I will have purchased a smaller 'eco box' type car to do my daily drudgery miles so that the M can be properly pampered as a weekend toy.

It's my first M, something I've been aspiring towards for many years and hopefully it will be the first of many.

If you've got this far thank you for reading my rambling thoughts and hope to see a lot of you in July in the Lake District !

Cheers

Steve

Sounds like you're enjoying it so far - good stuff!

I've had my 3.0si Z4C for a year and I still really like it and enjoy driving it but there's a part of me that wants to say bugger it and go buy an ///M. The white one that has just come up for sale in particular.

Very nice write up...
I pretty much agree with all the points you mentioned coming from 2 previous Z4's. I would add that the M differential is a huge help in getting the power to the road... :driving:

Excellent post . Pretty much sums it all up as far as I'm concerned, although mine doesn't seem to suffer as much from the squeaks and rattles.

And do you know what? It doesn't feel any different after 18 months of ownership (IMHO)

Me too - heh heh - when the saleslady started the car I almost wrote out the cheque on the spot.

I am so glad that I had a 3.0Si before the M as I appreciate the M even more. It is quite special and not very common. The Z4MC is the only car I have owned where I've found myself missing it if I've not driven it for a few days.

The OP is spot on over build quality and niggles but that is the way many cars of this era have gone.

Good write up Steve!

I share your disappointment with the Logic 7. I don't find mine too tinny and it's got fair bass but it just lacks any decent clarity. As with all the Z4 speaker setups I find it better if you adjust the fader so it's slightly more biased towards the front speakers. That way you're hearing more through the components at the front and less through the shitty 4" ones behind the seats.

Totally agree......I wasn't sure it would be much difference between si and M, but there sure is.

I haven't driven my M for a few days and want to take it out, but its all nicely washed and the weather here is yuck............

I think we got our M Coupes around the same time Steve, I only wish my experience thus far had been as good as yours!

First a flat battery which I've now discovered is knackered as it has ran flat twice within a few days with nothing only the alarm to run it down.

And as of yesterday I had the Check Engine Light come on and the idle is pretty erratic. No Limp mode but you can tell things aren't right.

Must admit it has really taken the shine off the car for me, has got me thinking "why had it only done 11k miles on an 06 plate". Maybe I'm being too paranoid but I just didn't expect problems this soon on a low mileage BMW. :x

Good write up Steve, you seem to have the car pretty much spot on. I agree the stereo is really poor but in the roadster with my straight through exhaust it suffices!

I would say that keeping the revs below 5,000rpm when the engine's warmed up means you miss out on perhaps the best part of the engine. At about 5,500rpm the car suddenly leaps for the horizon ( VANOS kicks in I suppose) as the exhaust note starts to howl and you hope your underwear can stand it all :) .

Well, the flat battery will be down to lack of use, so kind of expected on such a low milage car and maybe BMW should have replaced it before you got it as a precaution. Suprisingly, just one completely run flat battery can actually result in a buggered battery especially if it has drained over a period of time.
Don't let it spoil your opinion of the car though. As for the Check Engine light, that unfortunately seems quite a common fault and you'll need a sensor or two replaced I think in the exhaust system.
Once you have it back up and running right, put some miles on the car and enjoy the car, it should prove reliable. Cars aren't meant to be garage queens and although I bought a low milage one also, they're not necessarily without problems due to it.

Bought my 56 Plate (Dec 2006) with just 6***miles on it last July and thankfully it has proven reliable and I have been putting miles on it ever since with no problems. Nearly 21k miles on the car now and running better than ever, especially after the recent inspection 1 :driving:

This is typical of low mileage cars. Other things to look out for are sticking calipers, squeeky wipers, sticking handbrake. These are all sorted easily and are not a long term issue. Regular use will keep the car reliable.

Re Logic 7, yes it is pants and not worth a premium. If you want a decent sound system, it is better to take out the original and fit a new head unit but you lose the sat nav - doh!

...those damned squeaky wipers! Lucky they become inaudible over 5,000rpm...

At the end of a hard test drive (during which I frightened the pants off the salesman by joining the M6 at 7,500rpm in third gear), the sound when blipping the throttle, and hearing it popping back through the exhaust was that of the car telling me I wasn't going home without it...

Six months in and I haven't stopped smiling :D

Good review by the way.

Sounds about rigth dude. And i very neutral level headed view on the Z4M

You know i've noticed this in the Z3 3.0 231bhp ? I find this very strange ? Normaly Big N/A engines get along well in the higher speeds? I used my grandads 320CLK 2000 model, for a while...similar kind of engine as the M54..But the M54 on a dyno is just a better all round engine.Anyhows if anything this CLK got better at 50mph onwards...And pulled really well to 130mph..the Z4 Seems to struggle..It's no overgeard engine in any way? I dunno .. find it strange..

I had the same issue with mine - had to wait weeks while a battery arrived via boat. Ended up putting the car on a battery trickle charger for the duration. Battery was replaced under warranty

Definitely a fun car to drive :)

I just got back last night from a trip to france in which for some reason in a moment of madness we (the wife and I) decided to do in her Z3....

Well after 6 hours driving on the way back... I was sorely tempted to jump in the MC and take it for a spin as I haven't driven it for almost 2 weeks.... not owned any other car that has made me want to jump in and drive it after stepping out from a 6 hour drive!

Not particularly salient to the topic as I`m 8 months in but just been for a glorious hoon along a great road A4 from Newbury to Hungerford. Haven`t done that in a while. Have recently been thinking of swapping the M but I can`t think of another car that would have given me that thrill. It`s such a good road as well, everyone ought to try it. Had a little play with a bike on the way and let`s just say I didn`t let the side down! I came back with my adrenaline pumping and my hands shaking.

I don`t know whether anyone remembers but I had my engine replaced about 5000m ago and it`s really on song now.

On the daily commute to work I get to thinking I need something a bit softer and have been thinking M3 with EDC or even a 650i convertible. Journeys like the one above make me think how would I give up that S54 angry scream through to 7800rpm?

Little niggles still there on build quality, car goes to Dick Lovett next Friday for rear spring investigation and front valence air scoop but somehow, seeing as it`s all on warranty, I don`t care!!
