M back boxes, I can offer a good home.

Don't let them just sit in a cold damp garage, looking in envy at your aftermarket zorst languishing where they once sat, sell to me and I will give them a new lease of life. :D

I am reluctant to cut my own up as the cases will be contaminated with carbon and the welds could over a pretty short time corrode through, so havering a spare pair makes a bit of sense

If they are cleaned up and welded correctly they should be fine. You would have to use stainless steel welding equipment witch ever way the are welded.

I have just done this for a forum member. Its not an easy job once your in the back box that's the easy bit done!! Cutting out the insides and re-welding to make a nice clean job was very difficult and time consuming. Hows about just getting another set of back boxes made up? If you where going to do the mod yourself you can by back boxes and tips and pipes and make them up could be a nice project. I am at the minute making a set for myself (for a non M car) i am doing it all completely diy.

As the originator of modded silencers for the Z3M and Z4Ms I've done this job a fair number of times and over a few years. I really can't see the problem that you see. The OEM silencers are stainless steel and if you use stainless wire in a MIG welder with a shielding gas, then your weld should be clean where it matters. The carbon will be on the inside of the boxes, only, and you can only reweld them back together on the outside and therefore shouldn't include any carbon if you clean the outside of the boxes before welding.

The bigger problem of doing this to your only set of silencers is that once you've modded them you'll not be able to revert to OEM if you are not happy with your work. I've previously posted my recommended exhaust mod on this forum, which should not disappoint you.

exdos is again correct. And as he says in his post it aint easy. Quite a bit of serious tooling is need for this mod (to do it right and neat)

I did think about aftermarket cans and then just welding on connecting pipes and hangers, but was prepared to be a bit more patient for a set of OEM to turn up.

I have access to coded welders who are far far better at it than me :D , and mandrel pipe bending equipment etc, so might venture down the build your own route, we shall see.

Just a sense of OCD regards the welds, not debating what you are saying, but wanted a 2nd set so that I have some to revert back to if needs be. It is a concern of mine, even if only a1% risk! but not so much to stop me doing it more just to make sure I do it well.

Mark if you have those facility's at your finger tips. You really have to go the custom build route buddy  If you dont like them someone will always buy them at the right price.

There are loads of websites that sell all sorts of exhaust parts. I think i have seen stainless steel silencers from as little as £60.

Good luck how ever you go about it
