Luxury car tax….. Help!

I’m considering a vehicle which is currently SORN.

It suffers luxury car tax until 31/12/2024 then it’s the flat rate of £190 p.a. (Or whatever that may be after the budget!)

If I buy it next week I could obviously tax it for 12 or 6 months, or set up monthly D/D But….

Is the luxury car tax pro-rata’d, or do I have to pay the entire years addition even though I’d only be owing the car from say 6th September to 31/12 in the luxury tax period?

I would hope to only have to pay 4/12th’s of the annual luxury levy but I can’t find anything to confirm this anywhere :headbang:

Does anyone know for certain please?

On my x5, it was 3 months on extortionate followed by proportion of £190 for the rest of the year.

Brilliant, thanks. That’s what I’d hoped for but the HMRC/DVLA websites are clear as mud on this

That's because their system presumes all cars are taxed continually without change for the six year period.
Also because when it comes to tax of any kind, they make the rules up as they go along, depending on the day of the week IME.

I taxed a car for 12 months which had it's sixth birthday during the period (think it was around 10 months in). I was charged a full year at the higher rate, so an extra two months. They didn't calculate it pro-rata, paying ten months at one rate then the last two at the lower rate.
I sold the car during the period so didn't look into whether there is a way of clawing back the additional two months.

Mine had moved 6 months due to the sorn period during Covid and it was 6 month high and 6 months nothing-ish

This car is currently Sorn, and the expiry date of ‘nice car tax’ is 31/12/2024.

Surely if I took the same option and went monthly they couldn’t load 4 monthly payments with a full years additional tax could they?

I mean it’s not a deal breaker on the car, but it would be good to know for sure…. And here we have two different experiences :|

When you have the plate and want to pay the tax, it will all be clear.

Obviously the car has been mine from new

It will be pro-rata’d.
My Boxster tax renewal came through at £325 for 6 months or £375 for twelve months..Basically, the last 6 months were only charged at £10/mth, whereas the first 6 months were premium loaded

Now … that effort can be rewarded by what you are getting? :poke:
