Lumpy running diagnosed

Well the saga continues, after spending £1200 on the repair that never worked there now saying its the intake vanos and the exhaust vanos that need changing and also the cam shaft actuator needs replacing as well, only another £650 required to do the job, so i thought stuff it and had ago myself, i took out both vanos solinoids and cleaned them up, put them back in and the car seems a hell of a lot better, not lumpy on start up and runs fine, i feel like ive been taken to the cleaners for £1200, hope it stays ok but only time will tell :headbang:

Nice one, my 2.0 as always a bit lumpy and grumpy first thing in the morning (bit like it's owner).
Did you do any pics /write-up, always useful to have easy stuff people can get their hands dirty with... :)

£650 for the VANOS solenoids?! They're an £80 part and fitting is 30 mins each. I too cleaned up one of mine which fixed the fault for a while, but it came back so I replaced and no issues since.

You forget that anything with the blue/white badge adds a premium of at least £350 on any job....

I bet that's not hard either! Get them to take off the VANOS, it's a very easy DIY unless they're only charging £20 to do it.

I had a similar problem last month and after getting several 'professional' opinions which i was'nt happy with i decided to use a friends ramp and have a good old nosey around myself.... found a slight tear (roughly 1cm) in the intake vacuum hose, for now its wrapped round tightly with electrical tape which has sort of done the trick until i can do a proper job. other than that i was thinking lambda sensors on the manifolds (bad fuel mixture= lumpy idle)....

QUESTION
Is a engine supposed to run perfectly smoothly at idle........
(Is it a problem if it does not / Has it always done this)

ANSWER
no
(Shut up with this question)

An engine is supposed to run smooth on tick over, would you buy a car that ran lumpy on tick over i dont think so, i think ive sorted it now any way by putting a new vanos inlet solinoide in, it goes a lot better and ticks over fine now, i think i was ripped off by the garage doing a job that didnt need doing and then wanting more money to put it right

hmm ive got a 2003 E85 3.0 with 110k and over the year or more its started tapping and sounding rough. im now wondering if this could be the cause i.e the chan??? any thoughts?

It was only rough on start up from cold, once it was running it was fine, could be the vanos the difference to mine is great
