Luggage Rack?

Right I need some advice on a suitable luggage rack for the Z that I can use when touring.

Google gives me some options most of them give me the fear that the paintwork will get wrecked.

I need to be able to carry an inflatable kayak and all the bits and bobs that go with so trying to ram these in the boot is not an option. Passenger seat is not an option either.

Ooh! You'll be asking for advice on a towbar next..

There are some suction ones I've seen advertised but I'm not convinced myself. The boot lid is already 'heavy' and I for one would not want to stress it any more.

Not sure you'll get any recommendations on this site! :P

What good is a Z if I can't take it on a multitude of adventures!

Maybe i just need me a more compact Kayak

I have one of these, would it be big enough to fit the kayak in? They do them in different sizes. My daughters paddle board would go in one when it’s deflated and in it’s carry pack

This is quite a good rack, a friend of mine had one for his Zed and used it a few times for big trips across Europe.

He had a strict protocol which included not exceeding 80mph with it on

Not operating the roof with any load attached to it

He had no issues and only one paint mark where he hadn’t cleaned the boot lid properly before fitting it.

Get a 'follow me' sign like they have on airport marshalling trucks, and get your friend to follow in a more suitable vehicle : :D

Of course the best route is a trailer...BMW did a Euro certified trailer kit for the E89 enjoy :driving:

That's a pretty gender-specific comment you're making there.
True, but fortunately not politically correct.

In this day and age, either or both of you could be wrong! I could potentially be offended...
I think your sense of humour is going to fit in well here

That might work actually

Could talk to your Autoglym friends to see if there's any more robust ceramic type protection they could put on the boot lid, as an added layer for peace of mind?

I'll run it by them tomorrow when I drop the car off. Apparently, the owner's son is obsessed with having a z4 as his first car so hes going to drop down to see it when i drop it off :P

Do a search for:

BMW OEM Multi Trailer

Maybe that will work!
Looks pretty cool actually, although not sure if it’s one of those internet jokes...

You can get racks which fit over the top of the boot. Not sure about roof operation with it installed.

If you aren't carrying a passenger, you could always take the seat out!

I was dubious about the paintwork but the mat is really well designed and seems to offer enough protection. As someone else suggested it might be worth extra ceramic coating on the boot lid just to make sure
