lowering springs query

hypothetical question,... if i had some H &R lowering srings for the rear of the coupe, that drop it by 30mm, buti only wanted a 20mm drop,... could i place a 10mm rubber or hard plastic pad under the spring, would, 1, it be safe, 2 would the spring still locate in the cup and 3, would it hav the desired effect, oh and 4 has anyone tried it before. i have heard of chav boy racers cutting coils off springs to slam their cars and even removing spring altogether !!! :|

Would it be safe and reliable: no!

The better option would be to get springs which give the desired height... Raising it 10-15mm and you are back to oem sport spring levels.

Question is why go to h&r if you dont want to lower?

just that i heard they were a better ride and thought they only do a 30mm drop, what could be the worst case scenario in your opinion, would the spring not be located deep enough in the cup ? just curious really as i have been driving around with two broken springs , the broken bits were fished out which i guess is the same as a lowering spring ,but i couldnt see or feel any difference. I now have another pair of low mileage oem springs but was just thinking of changing them to h and rs now so as to chandge them once instead of twice as the standard springs will still give me that too hard a ride feeeling. :?
 
hugely off topic, but most of the 'chavs' that cut coils don't cut enough, drive like fools and then it all goes pear shaped.

Though generally perceived to not be safe, there are numerous guys on StanceWorks running chopped coils (granted for a temporary period) with no major issues purely because the car is so slow, they don't push their luck with the car itself.

As for the pad, probably not the best thing to do, however you could get an adjuster similar to that of a rear coilover to increase the height.

Of course the natural choice would be to go for a custom coilover setup whereby the kit is designed and then set up to your needs and requirements (thinking about Broadway Static coils here). This option would probably cost in the region of say...an arm or a leg.
 
that is my plan to go for kw v3 but this was an interim measure, guess now i bought the oem springs is to fit them for now hey ?
 
Excellent choice on coilover!

I'm running the v2 personally and can't fault it at all!

The rear will be too high if you fit the oem rear spring though! :fuelfire:

If your coupe has sport springs on then the h & r's should only drop it another 20mm anyway.

i believe H&R lower SE by 35-40mm, with SE being 15 higher then sport.

My Eibachs lowered by sport by 15mm... so thats an alternative if you dont want such a large drop... and imo i find the progressive nature of the Eibach much more compliant then OEM... and only become harsh when you really push the car.
 
its an m, have fitted the oem springs while i decide if i can stretch to the kw 3, looks fine but still too hard a ride for bumpy roads.at least she'll pass an mot now though :thumbsup:
 
The rubber pad which supports the spring on the base is offered by BMW in several sizes (thickness). Many owners running the H&R springs have installed the thicker pads to adjust height on the rears. Had to do this with a friends M so it would sit level.
 
Does anyone have a link to purchasing these pads in different sizes, or info on what thickness the standard struts have already? looking to raise mind ~5 mm

Interesting, that would explain why some cars look lower on the same springs....
