I never understand why anybody would want anything other than OEM track width. It's always what I aim for with aftermarket wheels etc.

Is it any different to altering ride height or adding a strutbrace?

Exactly. For me, factory = Minimum cost vs benefit calculation to meet regulatory rigour. Every item on our cars are the result of a compromise.
