Low Speed / Gearshift Rattle

On 1st and 2nd gear low engine speed gearshifts or clutch depressions, I am getting a reasonably loud rattle coming from the gearbox area according to my trained ear :P Loud enough to be heard over the stereo all the time, its not a light rattle, definitely something reasonably substantial but not as big as the whole gearbox or engine. Only rattles for a few oscillations.

I have searched and there are some mentions of differential rattle, which would suit the sound and also when it is occurring. However, its always mentioned as every now and then, or being slight and quiet.

I am just being picky and this is normal? Is there anything I can do to help? Change differential fluid for some a bit thicker?

Not sure it will be the DMF, would have thought that would cause abnormal vibration at certain engine speeds (frequencies) rather then a rattle on tip out. I don't have any vibrations anywhere in the engine speed / load range that I have noticed.

If it is not normal though I will have to take a dreaded visit to the dealer :(

Don't you have a bmw indy near you , worth asking on here for some recomendations in your area , could save you a fortune and get the beemer sorted !

I can confirm that what you describe as your expectation of the symptoms of a DMF problem are exactly what I experienced with my 320d at 145k miles when the DMF started to break up.

There can be a certain amount of rattle from the ///M transmission with rapid clutch depression in first gear. I suspect it is as a consequence of the sudden removal of large amounts of torque from the transmission as the clutch disengages. Mine has done this on occasion over 3.5 years and 35,000 miles of ownership.

Edit: does yours do it every time? If so, that is not normal!

not sure about the gearbox rattle, sometimes clutch springs can rattle as they unload torque when you shift, my local indy told me these diffs can get noisy and bmw do a low friction additive for about ninety quid which quietens them down, tho i think they are noisy on low speed cornering not gearshifts. good luck with that.

Thanks for the responses guys! I have barely done 4000miles, and it happens on the majority of my 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and majority of clutch down moments when parking (1st and R) so from what you are saying this isn't normal.

Been paying more attention to it, not convinced it is coming from the rear. Unless the sound is travelling up the driveshaft and emanating from the gearbox, as it definitely sounds just in front and to the left of me. It could be clutch springs, seems worse when depressing the clutch after letting it slip it little rather than bringing it all the way up, like just creeping forward/backwards a bit.

Visit to the dreaded dealer next week it is! Time to get my moneys worth for the warranty

Any recommendations or warnings for dealers in the Warwick / Leamington area? Warwick BMW seem the obvious choice... :?

You get a rattle when switching off the engine if you have your foot off the clutch but its fairly innofensive. What you(re discribing though is rather moàre worrying and worth a check at the gearbox. :(

Good luck!

Have not driven the car in a few days, will try and remember to do a key off with the clutch down to see if it sounds different.

Took the car into the dealer, one of the techs had a listen and thinks it could be the rubber doughnut (technical term) on the joint between the gearbox and prop shaft is knackered. Sounds logically enough, but begs the question why this has worn out on a less than average mileage vehicle. Booked back in next week to inspect properly and potential replace, will update thread for future reference.

Also using Rybrook BMW in Warwick, so will see how I get on with their 'service'

So keen toknow what this is as Im having a simillar problem! A slight chattering sound when I come off the clutch in gear in particular.. Car has only done 25ks so a bit miffed if it is a DMF.. Id pegged it to be a thrust bearing or simillar. May. Not be the same thing though..

Mine used to do this. I was told it was just inertia in the transmission components and nothing whatsoever to worry about.

Sorry guys forgot to update this. The dealer said there was nothing wrong with the car, they all do it / it's how they are etc. They said they checked the mounts and the rubber doughnut between the gearbox and the propshaft, but I don't see how they can tell if it is worn just by looking at it. From experience with other cars, things like engine and gearbox mounts can look totally fine but actually need replacing. I have driven the car a bit more since, I am still not convinced it is right. I will be going back to the dealer to try and get this resolved at my next opportunity.
