Low Oil Level light come on

Hi All

I had the yellow low oil level symbol come on today
Thing is the car has only done 11,500 since the last oil change which was in June 2015
I thought the change is every 15,000 miles or every 2 years which ever occurs first

Any feedback would be welcome :D

Doesn't need an oil change just a top up - BMW use oil and 11,500 without a top us is imo pretty good :) If you have the BMW service package they will top up oil for free

Hi Alan
I'm not part of any service package

I'd like to skip the top up and get the full oil change done in June
Could I do another 1500 miles on what's left?

Just top it up and then get the oil done in June.
Not sure if it's the same for the E89 but the oil light usually means 'add one litre'.

OK, what make and spec of oil? 5w-30 Castrol?

Or should i get 0w-30?

It doesn't specifically say whether it's 0w or 5w in the manual so I went on the Castrol website and entered my reg number. The correct one is 0w-30
And I managed to get a litre of it for £9 in Tescos

Sorry, I wasn't meaning to be rude, but I'm often amazed with some of the questions on potential engine critical issues that get asked on here. I'm all for sharing experiences & issues on this brilliant forum, but something that could directly impact on the car if you're given a 'bum stear' from a well meaning contributor is scary! Surely, for something like an oil level warning, the manual or BMW would be the only place to turn to. Likewise, the make & type of oil - get this wrong, and suffer an engine failure, could result in an interesting (and potentially costly) disagreement with BMW!

To be fair though, the manual doesn't give a preferred grade of oil. It recommends BMW long life oils over anything (BMW long life 01 and BMW Longlife 04??)
