well chaps, I'm going to view this motor this afternoon...so wish me luck!

Can you get a demo of the adaptive xenons please? Never seen that on a Z

Don't think it has cruise control, but could not really clearly see it.

Thought that about the lights too!

I arranged to travel 250 miles to meet him at a local specialist, they're happy to check it over and HPI it for me - this was all this afternoon. Then the owner came back and said he wouldnt take it over there as he has another person viewing at the same time and that he knows its a good car and wanted to do the deal at his house instead of at the garage.

Is this normal, or am i missing something?

I would always be happy to have a vehicle i was selling inspected but i wouldn't be going out of my way to do it .
The car is for sale & if the buyer wants to arrange a inspection then fine but the car stays right where it is & i would not want any old spanner monkey poking around or test piloting it .
A few years back i had a 964 for sale & a buyer some 200 miles away wanted me to take the car to a Porsche indy in Warrington (40 miles away) for inspection before he drove up , , needless to say that didn't happen
Unfortuantely the quest for decent used cars is always a gamble which can cost hundreds by the time you come across the right car .
Be interesting to see how this pan's out after todays viewing :?

The company in question is Autowerks in Northamptonshire and they're familiar with z4m's (so they told me) being a German car specialist. It was around 10 miles away from the sellers home so not too far. I'd happily take a car a small journey to get it checked out for a prospective buyer, for piece of mind considering these cars are very expensive and high performance meaning parts can wear quickly.

I even said to the guy that We could do 'the deal' at a local bank near to the garage. Of course I'd drive him home too :D

Let's wait and see how it goes :driving:

I wouldn't drive my car 10 miles to have someone i didn't know inspect it on behalf of a stranger :? in fact i wouldn't take it off the drive & nor would i ever ask that from anyone i was looking to buy a car off .
I wouldn't even allow a tesdrive until i see some insurance or some funds have changed hands . thats just me :? you get all sorts of clowns turning up to view cars & some may be serious , some not , i work on the basis i know my car inside out & wouldn't sell it privately from my own door if there was any known faults

100% agree.

I would not drive to another location either as I would be pretty sure that nobody would show up ...

Best not sell your cars to me then i guess lol, i'd always want to get it inspected by a mechanic; BMW dealer or BMW independant - who knows what they're talking about. I wouldnt dream of spending the sort of money these cars go for otherwise. I'm not mechanically minded so its essential.

I bought a Mitsubishi Evo 8 years ago with 10k miles on the clock and the owner was happy to take it to the dealers in Manchester to get it checked over for me (I paid of course), i flew up and bought the car that afternoon - no problems at all. I had it for 3 years after and solid as a rock.

I'd be quite happy for an inspection to happen on my drive but I wouldn't take my car to an unknown garage.

Why not buy AUC ?

Thats something i'm looking at too :)

Possibly the best way forward with the low number of target cars on the market , bit more cash maybe but peace of mind the car is what it should be .
There was a forum car , silver M roady 35k ish miles recently traded into a non franchised dealer near Nottingham
Can't remember the garage name but i know the car can be verified on here

Thanks, i'll see what i can find out about that if still in the Notts area. At the moment i'm looking at both the private adds and AUC until something nice and low mileage comes up and not with a stratospheric price tag. I saw one up at £49k the other day.

I'm in no rush and the money is there but not buring a hole in my pocket so i'm going to wait and see what comes on for sale.

So there's the findings gentlemen!!

As I walked upto the car, the familiar frontage of the car, together with that fanged look, seemed to be saying to me, "Hello ol friend, I knew you'll be back." (For those that don't know my car history, I had a silver Z4MC, and this car was A SILVER Z4MR) I was quite excited!!

Quick look around the car, the bodywork was very good, hardly any stone chips at all or scratches which has plagued several of the cars I've viewed lately, it wasn't the immaculate condition that my old coupe was in, but very good. Two minor front splitter damage. The alloys were all in very good condition, with only one alloys slightly kerbed. Tyres continentals all round, with plenty of tread. The hood is in great condition as well.

The test drive was superb. It drove very well, no stutter or hesitation, it drove better then some of the other Z4MRs that I viewed the first time around when I was looking for a Z4M. I am not sure if it's because I had a M before, but I had no problem with gear change at all, or if this was a better gearbox, it wasn't notchy at all.

However...there's always a but....

1. The hood opens and closes slowly and with a groan, which leads me to think the motor is going to need doing soon.

2. No running in service stamp. Is this really that important??

3. Last serviced by Mtech in 2010, so an Insp2 will be needed. But I knew that before I went. He did an oil and filter change around Jan this year.

4. There's a funny rattle when you start the car from the engine...very brief, barely half a second. No idea what this is, but certainly did not impact the way the car drove.

For me, a purchase of the car @ £15k, together with the expense of the Insp2 and possibility of the hood going, means I can't afford it......

The search continues.... :driving:

So no running in service and not serviced between 2010 and Jan 2015.

That would be more than enough for me to walk away.

Plus the boot badge is not straight which sets my OCD off

Funny rattle will be the starter motor. Mine has done it from cold since I got the car 3 years ago. No problems so far...

What about the classic faux pas & giveaway of a non besotted owner
