Loud tappet like noises from Engine....

I wouldnt spend a penny on that engine until the cause of the tick and the little metal flake (iron? aluminium?piece of headgasket?) is known tbh.

So any news?
Did the shop also take the vanos apart to check for loose vanos bolts? (known issue)
Did they check the engine when it ran at all with a stethoscope to locate the area of the knock?

i Say new motor. Overhaul it before putting it in. You will get a good bit of doh back selling your motor spares or repairs. Keep the sump and wiring loom as they are model specific

Update,

There's a few things that have come to light both from the garage and comments on pictures posted here. All alluding that the service on this motor has either been patchy or the car was pretty unloved by its previous owner or worse both.

Perhaps I was a mug to buy a high mileage Z4MR (no, I was a mug) but hindsight is 20:20 and all that but it was the closest BMW AUC Car and in 2008 pickings were slim!

Whatever happens I've sunk in at least 3.5k into the repair \ engine rebuild of this car. After the run in service has been completed it will be going to BMW for an additional engine health check (compression check, vanos, what have you, etc).

The Zed isn't being scrapped!

Since I first clapped eyes on the E46 M3 at the Motor show I was all over having one! A house purchase binned that idea but many many years later I got the chance to taste the S54 in a format that worked with SWMBO as she previously had a Z3.

Monster engine? Great looks? and sub 20k? Take my money!

Almost 10 years later, she has a problem but you know what? I couldn't care less. The rest of the time its had the ability to shock me (when warm!) delight me on the Michelin PSS's (didn't get on with the Conti's) and still be a car I park up and have another look before I leave.

After all this work, she stays until she's replaced.

Erm we're test driving a 718 S Saturday but I still don't think it will match the ferocity of the Zed.

I'll keep you posted

Great attitude! I guess once all these issues are addressed you will have a worry free S54 to enjoy for years to come.

The new 718s is very fast.
I've done a frienly hoon with a german one (cayman s) that I came across the autobahn a month ago and on low speeds I could keep up with relative ease (my Z has 380bhp/465Nm), but on high speeds (120mph+) that thing just took off!
They've sorted the drag on that car really good. The CW value must be really low compared to the Z
Its certainly way faster than the previous boxster/cayman S

So be sure to make your testdrive 120mph+ next saturday to experiece that

i totally agree, its was more you that seemed to be suggesting its end was near after this incident....
i fully expect something similar happening to mine and when it does, ill rebuild it back up. can i ask why you getting them to rebuild it then take it back to bmw for another bill???

well done and great attitude . i hope to be that crazy on maintenance and preventive stuff that i avoid the common ones.

I guess most of us don't know how previous owners may have treated our cars. Glad you sorted yours and didn't lose the love for it.
The 718S will probably depreciate more in the next year than the Z cost to repair if that helps your case for keeping the Z. :driving:

thats a great way to look at it!!! didn't see it from that view but very true!

Update!

Shes back! She's purring like a kitten! She is being run in for 500 miles than getting the oil changed. The final bill was {b]HUGE![/b], but we had prepared for it as there's no way to do a full engine rebuild etc for £3.50 and a packet of fags.

I will say that Ron at Autobahn is complete gent and massive mine of information on the S54. The fact the shop was full of M3's with engines in various states of undress spoke volumes.

Very interestingly he mentioned the loose CAT heat shield and said it would drive him mad, in all the time its been going to a BMW main dealer it was never mentioned! but he demonstrated what he meant and I was like "It's always been like that". Needless to say that's getting sorted when it goes back in a few weeks for the oil change.

I have no doubt with the amount of hours spent on it BMW would have charged the 9K plus. It wasn't cheap but pretty much everything that could be changed has been changed.

Lessons learned.

  • Just because its BMW AUC it doesn't mean the previous owner was a plank when it came to up keep.
I will be doing Bi Annual oil and filter changes
It's cheaper to repair than to scrap IMHO as I'd have to buy a replacement

On another note the Cayman S was way better than the Cayman and when the time comes (3 years) we'll definitely go that way.

As the 3 is getting on for 160K with barely a grumble we'll be replacing that (430i or 440i Coupe) in the next few months, sooner if a bargain comes up.

Cheers for all the support and I'll be posting some before and after pics once I get them.

Glad to hear it’s back & repaired properly, did it need cams & followers as well? What did they replace?

I've changed my mind on that, as I've done almost 100 miles since getting her back so Autobahn will do the post run it oil change and in the new year she'll go to BMW for the oil and brake fluid service. I might as well keep it FBMWSH.

I’m not sure of the benefit of retaining bmw service history when another garage have done major engine work.

I suppose this would all depend on whether the work was disclosed to a new buyer.

more to the point for the people in the know, i actually think full bmwSH is nothing to point me towards a car, all thats happened is you've paid more for most likely a lower ** standard of work. If i came across 2 cars one had full bmw sh and one had full sh at a well known indie, id choose the well known indie all day long.
