Loud noise

Loud rattle noise on start up but not always. Sounds like something loose. Engine is the m54. Thank you in advance.

Literally just during start up?
How long does it continue?
Does it disappear when warm?
Does it go away if you rev it?
Get someone else to start the car so you can define whereabouts it is coming from on the engine.
Caution - if it is the Disa valve then you need to get it fixed pronto or it will head off to visit the valves!

Thanks for your quick reply Smart bear and enuff_zed. The Disa valve was replaced by a previous owner (forum member) with an aluminium upgrade valve. It lasts about 3 seconds and only happens when cold and not always. Today my wife started the car, bonnet closed and revved it when she did and it sounded like all hell had broken loose. But again only lasted a few seconds. Doesn't do it when warm. Goes away once it is running then doesn't come back again until another cold start but not always and not sometimes for days. Its been happening on and off since buying the car. I read somewhere on the forum that another member had the same problem and was told it was the starter sticking due to lack of use and his stopped after a while and assumed this was the same but mine seems to be getting worse and louder. Worried about starting it now. Thanks again.

Well at least the disa issue is covered?
Starter is a possibility, especially if only when cold and only for a few of seconds.
Again, it would be easier to help if you could try to identify where on the engine the noise is coming from.
I assume you know where the starter is? On the top at the rear. Just about visible in front of the bulkhead.
All engine noises are difficult to guess at I'm afraid.
Have to say, come back when you have a better idea of it's location. Sorry.

Is this a common problem with the timing chain tensioner tug, it’s done a little less than 60,000 miles? The noise is only there for a couple of seconds on cold starts after I let go of the key. And not always. Many thanks.

I guess they could go at any time Mikey, i had to replace mine at 67,000. Like yours, the noise was there on cold start up for just a few seconds but never once warmed up. Sounded like a loud metallic rattle, which was worrying to say the least. Mine was that weak you could compress it by hand easily.

Hopefully it is just that for you and easily replaceable at not much expense, if i can remember mine cost around £45 from euro car parts and fitted it myself.

Cheers, tug

If it fails completely then that's catastrophic as the chain can jump a couple of teeth and wipe the valves out i believe. Mines been fitted for 60,000 now so i will be keepin an eye on mine also.

You say its stopped again, thats strange, but if it were me mate i would get it whipped out and tested, to be on the safe side.

Just checking, OP says his is an M54. Wasn't aware this was a big problem on these?
Trouble is, if it's stopped you can't find out where it was coming from.
Symptoms do seem to point to the starter? But hard to judge.

Could be mate, but im just advising on the tensioner scenario cos ive been there. If when it happens again mikey could record it then it would be a good way of finding if its a small easily rectified problem or something more serious about to happen. Either way it would be good for him to know & get sorted.

Cheers, tug

Exactly. Apologies if it sounded as though I was dismissing your thoughts. Just that as you are the '4-pot foreman' I was wondering if you were thinking of the wrong engine.

No, not at all mate, no apologies needed. I would imagine though with any chain system there is a chance of tensioner failure & also would be a very expensive experience.

Thank you again tug and enough_zed, I will keep an eye on it as it disappears for a while. Hoping it’s not the chain. Will be booking it in for 4 wheel alignment after Christmas and I’ll ask them to look at it then.

i have a loud clatter / rattle on start up for about a second, its not Vanos, disa, water pump or starter as i have changed all of them, could be a hydraulic lifter but sound too loud for that. will be taking engine apart over the christmas holidays to find out problem. Sound is coming from top middle to back of engine!!
