Loud metallic grinding (video now added)

Finally managed to get the Mrs project car taxed today, so off to the petrol station as it was running on fumes and I think the line from the advert that said ‘drives fine as it is’ included a little ‘artistic licence’….

I’m not bothered, I didn’t expect a car with out issues… I’m just glad it was delivered by transporter :D

Anyway, first drive time, very loud grinding/metallic noise. Painful and unmissable.

So I’ve got the car up on stands and while there is a degree of noise when rotating the rear wheels by hand, it’s nothing compared to the noise when driving it.

Car was advertised as having ‘’a grumbly diff and needing a new wheel bearing, but drives fine as it is’’ - before I start taking the wheels off and looking at the brakes, hand brake shoes etc any other obvious ‘quick tests’ I’m missing?

Just to add, I’m not moaning about the car at all, in fact I’m quite amused at this point… 8)

I came across a similar issue a while back. After lots of worry and frantic googling of diff prices I discovered that when a rear wheel had been removed, it had dropped onto the top edge of the brake back plate, bending it into contact with the disc. With the backplate being a thin piece of metal it resonated and made a noise out of all proportion to its size.
Hope it's that simple for you.

As the last post said probably the brake dist dust shield, common issue as my passenger side front came loose a while back now the drivers is rattleing horribly, but not had a chance to fix it yet :headbang:

Sadly, I think this is the Diff,

With the rear of the car up on stands and 1st gear engaged turning either rear wheel results in a little noise, but not excessive. Needs new discs and pads for certain, but nothing too loud. In this position, turning one wheel causes the opposite wheel to turn in the opposite direction (as you would expect) and not much noise from the Diff.

Now then, put the car in Neutral and turn a rear wheel and the drive turns the propshaft (again as expected)… but, also starts the grinding noise? Which leads me to believe diff is more than ‘a little grumbly’

Hi True-Blue,

Your explanation does indeed point towards the crown wheel/pignon coupling making noise but I would make sure it is not a wheel bearing first though as it would be a simpler and cheaper fix. I am worried you could have little noise from the wheel bearing with car lifted as there is little load on them but then it might be noisier when driving?

Hi, thanks for the input.

The noise is relatively loud with the car in neutral when turning a wheel…. I’ll try and get a video

Here’s what is sounds like, this is rear wheels off the ground (car safely on axle stands)… my lad turning the wheel by hand while I video :?
