Yes they can be thirsty,
What is the level showing on the dipstick?
We can then advise on how much to put in
Also did you warm the car up by taking it out for a spin before you checked the level?

Yeah I'd been out for a drive before I checked the level. Engine was up to temp.

Worryingly the dipstick is suggesting it's completely empty :(. No warning lights!?

The warning light should come on when it needs half a litre, sure yours should have this light

I do check under the car regularly and there's no oil stains left outside my house or in my work car park :s

If it was actually empty surely it would have to be dripping like when the car is still to go through that amount since the last service 2 months back?

Not necessarily going to see oil on drive because of the undertray, maybe take of the inspecton panel under car that's used for the oil changes they may have not put the bolt bac in correctly or not used a new washer on the bolt.
Just throwing ideas out .
Try topping up with oil an check level every half litre that's put in.may not be quite as low as think.
Don't understand why no warning light :!:

Just a thought, but you dont know from the last service whether the oil was topped up properly or whether someone just added 4 litres and then didnt run car and top up required amount. Nil or very low on the dipstick doesnt mean (at least on other cars) that oil is empty so of I were you I would buy some decent oil top up properly and then see how it goes, knowing you are starting from a set point. But I have in my time seen all sorts of bodged jobs from garages like not tightening up oil plug etc etc so have a good check - it could explain why engine is clicking.

Thanks mike.

I gradually added some Castrol Edge until the dipstick started to show. It's comfortably taken 4l so a bit concerned about what's going on but will keep an eye on it.

It's sounding far better tonight. Still a slight ticking but not 100% sure exactly how it should sound when idling...

ok, if you have to top up 4L of oil, I cant imagine that your engine didnt have some sort of oil starvation. Ever seen that red light pop up?
If your oil level is that low that it suffers from starvation it makes sense that some of the hydraulic lifters arent fed anymore, but that also means that most of the bearings arent fed anymore of oil.
Are you sure your tip of the dipstick is still complete, and that you're measuring the oil correctly (so put the dipstick complete in the tube)
Topping up 4L of oil is very very concerning.

Do an instrument cluster test like in next video and see if your oil light (next to the right blink indicator) lights up orange and red:

Yeah it's not a good situation. I'm booked in to my mates garage at the weekend so hopefully it's something easily fixed

mine was drinking oil loads and I got the vacuum pipe (i think its called) leak sorted and it hardly drinks now.

I missed this as you edited after I posted :) Will give this a shot, thanks

Car was in my mates garage this morning.

Not a single drop of oil has escaped from the engine as it was completely clean underneath. Im going to run it for a month checking the oil regularly to see if the piston rings are done, or it the pillock just didn't fill it up properly at last service.

In other news the front ball joints and bushes are done, plus I've got a weeping shock so they'll all be getting replaced. Also a leak from the gearbox but it's got more than enough fluid in it so one to keep an eye on. Warranty should cover it all though.

In more other news everything else is looking great. New pads and discs recently plus theres uprated springs. That, combined with the fact the roof motor was bone dry and dusty shows the car has been garaged, cared for and loved!

As I thought earlier my bet is on the previous idiot not topping up properly which would explain the clicking. Hopefully you will not have done any engine damage as they are fairly robust engines and can probably run for a while without seizing. The clicking was certainly a call for help from the engine so glad it might be fixed. If oil was getting past the rings such that you use 4litres of oil I would be looking for clouds of smoke on start up or going through the gears. You may well have had a very lucky escape.

Having been on holiday last month my engine was making the noise intermittently - after the suggestions of topping up and running a spirited drive the engine seems alot smoother running - 140mile I treated her to (top down at night in the refreshingly freezing air along the north coast) :driving: running superb so far.

 cheers for the suggestions guys - a number of previous threads covering different angles.

So that's been 3 weeks. I've since I filled up. I've not got a single drop on the panel under the car, or on the drive at my house.

800 miles done since then.

There's been no smoke or noises so I'm pencilling this one in as the fanny who serviced the car fucked up.

Thanks again to all for the suggestions and advice!
