Loud bang and sound of metal

Driving this morning and heard a loud bang and then a metal clanging sound from rear drivers wheel arch. Could this be broken spring , if so what is the repair cost likely to be ? Anybody know ?

can't remember how much my dealer charged but it was that bad

Almost certainly a rear spring.

Easy DIY repair to change both for less than £200, depending on which model you have (3.0/ M springs or standard)

Spring for sure- if u have warranty it may be covered- mine was!

Thats exactly what happened to mine 2 weeks ago today.

Was a rear spring, replaced under AUC last week.

Agreed sounds like rear spring. Had mine replaced at dealer last Sat, £380 for the 2 fitted - warranty thank goodness.

Although I did tell them I thought the spring was broken they still charged £75+ diagnostic fee to confirm

Told my dealer what it was - out of warranty - rang BMW - all FOC, depends on your dealer I suppose.

Agreed, that sucks bigtime.....my indy down here in wales who looks after my 4x4s wasted two hours looking for a front diff problem that we eventually agreed we'd leave alone for now. No charge.

I'm just trying to find "For diagnosing broken springs on my two seat sports car - no charge" in this......no luck so far though?

C'mon Lacroupade - if both wheels have still got drive on a 4WD then there is no problem with the diff. If it stops making forward progress then perhaps it has

In a similar vain a propshaft needs looking at when you can pick it up off the ground and a gearbox when you have only 2 cogs left

Yep defo a spring, my car is at BMW Crewe this very moment having its rear offside spring replaced under "goodwill".
Even if the car is out of warranty if you have kept up the BMW service history then I reckon you have a good chance of it being replaced for free. I tried to get them to change the nearside one as well but they wouldnt. If I were to pay for it to be changed it would be £213 all in!! :|

Mine was just a jingling noise until it stopped and a someone at the side of the road waved, I stopped and found the bottom coil, cost 70 pounds from the dealers and 10 pounds to fit at the tyre place when they were changing my wheels.
