Lost car key, dealer price is £280!!!!

Lost car key somewhere between work and being out and about. I’ve filled out a police lost property form and am still in the process retracing my steps looking for it.

I think it may be gone for good so I contacted the dealership for a quote

Do I have to go through them or can I buy a blank and have it coded for much cheaper?

There are blank replicas on eBay for £20 which can be cut and coded by an automotive locksmith apparently?

There is a guy near me bmkeys on eBay who cuts and codes keys. He does it while you wait, or if you’re too far will do it if you send your GM5 module. He done mine for £70ish if I remember rightly.
 
Assuming you have a spare (or the keys code or a good picture of your key) to cut a new one from, it should not be a problem cutting a new one.
The blanks on eBay are fine. I used one recently.
The electronics inside them usually use replaceable batteries rather than charging from the ignition like the original.
A good auto locksmith can cut the blade and program it. The programming is often the expensive bit. Maybe a forum member with an AK90 programmer can help you out with that bit.

Seafield Edinburgh, I assumed they’d all be the same price, but I phoned the other Edinburgh dealer and they quoted £134+ vat and said usually the £85 coding isn’t required

I’ll keep looking it’s not urgent until I lose another one

My battery has gone in the spare though so it’s the key in the door to open

My local dealer quoted £130 and when I asked for BMW owners club discount they knocked off 10% which brought it down even further, no coding required :thumbsup:

Replacing batteries is a fairly easy task.
Consider that as an option rather than spending money on another full-fat remote key that will also have a dead battery if not used regularly.
 
Only problem with blanks could be getting them cut. I couldn’t get anybody to cut by blank around where I live and work in east and West Sussex.

Went on holiday to Norfolk and got both cut for just a donation to charity so happily chucked in a tenner for the hero’s.

Local mobile auto locksmith is probably your best bet to get a new key, it needs cutting and the EWS needs reading to see what position the key needs coding to. There are people out there who offer postal service but it means you have to take your ews module out and sending it off with your working key. Mobile locksmith will do it all on the spot. Cheaper than getting one from BMW. Usual cost circa £130 from a mobile locksmith.
 
I’d rather spend the extra if the locksmith charges £130 for the real thing for £160 then you have a BMW warranty if any issues that’s my thinking everyone to there own. :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
 
I found it guys, couldn’t see it for looking at it, fell to the bottom of my food bag at work and found it when I’d ate myself to the bottom haha

Got a lift to and from work when the key was hiding in plain site

How big was the bag of food if it's taken two days to find the bloody key?! Are you perhaps actually a horse? :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:
