loss of oil somewhere...

If i fill my oil up, the oil light will come on within about 500 miles. Then I always have to add at least a litre. To me, this is excessive, although the car has done almost 100,000 miles now.

I had a rocker cover gasket leak which I fixed, so I know that's not the problem.

What's this ccv that people talk about? And is it costly/difficult to replace?

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the engine. Pulls well in all gears at any rpm.

Really not sure what's going on.

Ccv sits under the manifold and can cause excessive oil consumption..

As a quick check pull off the oil cap when the engine is running and place the palm of your hand over the filler hole, if the ccv valve is faulty you will feel vacuum ..

Also if you remove dipstick then you maybe able to hear a gurgling sound..

I assume you have checked for an oil leak underneath?

I have one from my oil filter housing which appears on the gearbox end. Maybe you have similar.

If you have a blocked CCV you'll have a load of blue smoke from the exhaust, and as said above there is a vacuum effect if it is faulty.

Stripped sump plug thread can result in a slow leak sometimes. If it's just a dribble you might never see a puddle underneath, just some staining around the plug.

A working ccv is supposed to create a vacuum in the engine, when they become blocked the vacuum becomes excessive & can also allow air to be drawn in through the rear crank seal causing a whistling sound.

Ah, so it shouldn't have too much vacuum then? I'll give it a check today as I need to add some oil again...

No leaks from what I can see.

Just put 1.5 litre's of oil in it. Used that much in just over 500 miles :o
That's definitely excessive.... are you sure you haven't got one of the experimental 2-stroke 3.0l engines....

 normal straight six as far as I know and hope!

Not really sure what's going on. It's going for an inspection 2 in a few months so will mention i then if I haven't sorted the issue.

If it's burning oil at the rate of 1.5 litres to 500 miles that's about a 50:1 mix and what some two stroke chain saws run on :o

It might be difficult noticing the car smoking though, worth having someone follow you too have a look and you would be able to smell that too.

I hope it's this valve and not something far more serious.
