Looks like I need a new power steering pump

Hi,

Only had the car a couple of weeks but picked up the noise on the test drive. I hoped it would be just be low fluid but after an inspection at an Indy today, it would seem that the pump bearings are on their way out.

Car drives fine but there is a whine, especially at low speeds and around town. On the motorway it isn't noticeable at all.

Question is, would it be better to get the original refurbed or should I bite the bullet and get a new one? Been quoted £508 + VAT for a new one from BMW and then 2 hours labour to fit.

Not the best start to M ownership but the car was a bargain and it looks like I have a really good Indy in Wigan who think the car is otherwise spot on for the money.

Did your Indy suggest one over the other?

He said it was an either / or situation but the refurb would be much cheaper. I may have to wait 7 - 10 days for the refurb too but I will hardly use the car in that time anyway.

Mine is in on Wednesday at the stealers for a new power steering pump, I get no noise on regular driving but a horrific squeel at full lock. This is a video showing my steering problem:

BMW diagnosed new pump required.

What kind of yearly mileage would you be expecting to do ? If like me a weekend car doing 1500/2500 then re con unit makes sense & done right should be no different to replacement

Isn't that just the noise of the release valve on full lock. I read on another forum that running hydraulic power steering caused problems with full lock due to high pressure and a relief valve was used to avoid the excessive pressure.

Only insured for 4K a year so I doubt we will exceed that Mr Wilks.

I will see what price a refurb comes back at.

Well the stealers had it, heard that, tested it, and determined it needed a new pump... I also posted this out to other forum members who all said there's sounded nothing like this. Fortunately I'm not paying for the pump, it's covered under 3 month statutory traders warranty. I just figured i'd put it out there again in case anyone else has the same sound.

Did you buy private, Havard? As surely that should be a warranty claim, even from a smaller independent garage.

No JAD. Got a great deal on a good car privately so you win some etc.

In fairness the pump is a little noisy and most would probably put up with it. It's actually noisier inside the car than outside. From what I can gather, pump noisiness and failures are not uncommon.

Did you resolve this? We noticed an oil leak on the right side of the engine yesterday and realised some how the power steering pump oil line was very loose. It's now started making a noise but oddly only intermittently. Might be in the market for a new pump :(

I had mine repaired via and indy in Wigan. Cost about £350 including labour. BMW wanted £600 for a new pump IIRC. Ours is now silent and I realise just how horrible it was originally.

That's good to know. Thankfully I think I've escaped the issue - I've fixed the leak and the noise was due to the psf running low!
