Looking to purchase a Z4

Hi

I'm new to the forum and hope to benefit from your advice. I really want to purchase a Z4, as a fun weekend car , sadly I only have a very limited budget in the region of £6k - £7K. I've seen a few examples in Autortrader but what I want to know is what are the more desirable colour combinations, engine size etc. Is there a aparticular age, face lift model I should go for, should I give up on the idea with my budget?

Any advice would be helpful, I'm completely new to this.

Thanks

There's always mine!

For £6,000 to £7,000 you wouldn't get a facelift. They came out in late 2006 and fetch £8,000 upwards usually (for a 3.0 litre).

For a weekend car I would get the 3.0 litre engine, manual gearbox. There are quite a few options available, sat nav, DSP stereo, xenons, parking sensors, bluetooth, heated seats, electric seats etc. so take your pick and try to find one with the options you want. I would also try to find one without the runflat tyres. They really do ruin the ride!

Lots more to talk about, but I need to go back to work. I’m sure others will be along to help!

depends on what you want.... you can either get an old 3.0 or a facelift 2.0 for that money

There are issues with the older model which the face lift fixed so if you get one pre facelift you may have to fork out for a replacement roof motor at some point as quite a few fail

mines currently for sale and is the cheapest face lift in the country I believe!!... just spent a fair bit on getting front bushes and gearbox oil replaced...there is nothing wrong with the car whatsoever otherwise I would of had the mechanic fix it when I went in :D

Yeah you can get a 3.0 for that money, mine is for sale, Black which is obviously the best colour (until it gets dirty)....

Thanks for telling me about your Z's for sale, they really do all look great, however at this stage I'm trying to get a feel for what I should be looking at or avoiding.

Are there certain models that cause more problems than others?

Are there colour combinations that are generally not liked and hard to sell on?

As for extra's/add ons I'm guessing the more you can get included the better.

Great tip about the run flat tyres - thank you

Of course I want to get as much "bang for my buck " as possible and will hunt around, just wanted a few tips on what to avoid or look out for.

Cheers

Hi Frazzle,

I have a 2003 BMW Z4 Roadster for sale, 70000 miles on the clock, in silver.

Recent service and MOT.

I have only done 400 miles in this since November 2012 and was only used as a weekend car.

If interested then you may contact me and I will give you further details about the car etc.

Frazzie - welcome to the Forum. Lots of advice on her about purchasing a Zed. There is a pre purchase checklist link in my signature which may help when you are looking.

Your budget is OK and certainly should see you get a 2003-6 model but condition etc will depend on mileage service history etc. Purchasing from a Forum member will perhaps indicate someone who has looked after their vehicle and taken a genuine interest in its maintenance. Some however just join the Forum to sell their vehicle (Smails take note.........).

As for engine choice this again depends on your budget but perhaps more importantly what you can afford to run. 2.2 and above on the pre facelift models will give you the 6 cylinder engine which is a joy to drive. There are problems with rear springs breaking and roof problems.

Always check prior to purchase if the springs have been replace and/or the roof motor. Rear springs are relatively cheap to replace and some update all four with springs to lower the vehicle. Personally not in favour of this but again personal choice. Certainly check for broken springs prior to purchase - Normally the bottom coil which then sits in the spring mounting plate and rattles when you go over a bump!

Check the roof goes up and down smoothly - and delays hesitation etc MAY be an indication the roof motor is on its way out :(

As for options - within your price range I would look at overall condition and service history - if both these pass the test then look at what extras it has :)

Has already been said but a good set of non RFTs will give you better ride and handling. Matching set across all four corners in preferable but certainly not a stopper to purchase.

As for colours - all a matter of personal choice but some of the more exotic colours (and there are not that many...!) may be difficult to sell on in the future. Silvers and greay are always a good bet, easy to keep clean and look stunning i.m.o. when detailed and polished  If it comes with a hardtop all the better but negotiate it within the deal rather than purchase as an extra.

There are loads of aftermarket wheel options some good some bad. A good check of rims for damage etc is essential as is the right tyre fit. 108s are cetainly popular on Zeds (composite OEM BMW wheel) but can deterirtare with corrosion if not looked after. If refurbed check they have been split rather than just sprayed over

GOOD LUCK

Yes that may seem the case, but some people shouldn't assume thats what I am here for.

you joined today and immediately selling your zed? Why else would you join the forum..
its not much of an assumption when its so blatant

Lol, no I have a new BMW Z4, so no longer needed the 2003, I didn't p/x my other BMW because I wanted to sell it private as I like doing it that way.

So me joining the forum is for my new BMW too because I want to learn more things about it.

Simple!!

Don't buy yellow, it won't effect the value but the rest of the forum members will have your life. Unless you're like me and love the attention :)

Mines got front and rear parking sensors , not much else on extras but as its a weekend only its no real problems just get the car that suits you !
With the long bonnet front sensors are brilliant by the way ;-)
Probably gonna do the audio aux out but again the sound of the engine is more entertaining than anytjing else ! ;-)

Thanks AlanJ that's really helpful, I've started hunting through the usual channels and will go and see and couple of examples over the next 7-10 days.

I've got a bit of a better idea of what I want - I think !

Good luck frazzle. For that budget you should quite easily pick up a decent zed so long as you do it before the sun really starts shining :)
