Hello Folks,

I live in the U.S. and have always wanted to purchase a summer\weekend car and have settled on the Z4. I'm doing as much research as possible, but not sure where to start other than to say I have a budget of between 25-30K U.S. to spend on a used model.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Lots of models to chose from, if you’re really not sure what’s right for you it’s probably a good thing to go on some test drives to form an opinion. There’s a buyers guide tucked away in the forum to refer to as well

Which model are you after?

There are currently 4:

E85, 2002 - 2008
E86, 2006 - 2008
E89, 2009 - 2016
G29, 2018 - (but from the sounds of your budget I doubt it’s this).

If you are after an E85 or E86, try and get a 2006 + car in a Sport trim; as they come with better seats, suspension and a more appealing steering wheel. They also come with the N52 engine which is the lightest BMW 6 cylinder engine ever made due to the block being magnesium; it is also silky smooth when driving. You could alternatively go for one of the M cars which come with the S54 engine from the E46 M3 instead.

If you are after an E89 (the only Z4 with a foldable hard top) go for one of the 6 cylinder engines in an M Sport trim. The 35is is considered to be top of the range but only comes with an automatic gearbox. If you prefer manual look out for a 35i, they are quite rare but worth it if you absolutely require 3 pedals.

G29 I won’t touch upon as my knowledge is not too strong other than the M40i being the one I would go for, but I don’t think it would fit with your mentioned budget.

$25-30k will get you a very nice Z4 in the US. You are starting your search out right. There are a few questions you need to answer that will determine what to start looking at.
1. convertible, hardtop, or both?
2. Manual or automatic transmission?
Where are you located?

Welcome to the forum.

Loads of good advice already, but here's a link to the buyer's guide someone mentioned above:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21281

Good luck finding the right one - they are great cars!
