Looking to buy Z4 Coupe

Been lurking on youtube and here for a little while and now i am on the hunt for a Z4 Coupe. I am in my mid 40's so no desire for the drop top.

I've had a few cars over the years. Last was 2016 VW Golf Gtd which I loved. Also SLK , Audi a4 2.0 tfsi all in the last 3 years.

Looking for a Auto Z4 but know very little about them. prices seem all over the place!
The last BMW I had was a BMW 530. Loved it but died a death .

Back to the Z4. What am i looking for? I do not currently do loads of miles, and has to be auto. Hate driving manual and currently have a 2018 Focus manual . Tired of the bore now!

I've looked on Ebay etc and I'm wary of such an old car as there can be so many problems.

Tip on what to buy and prices please folks?

Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum , had 3 auto Si coupes , great cars to own with relatively few weakpoints for a 13/14 yr old sports car & autobox itself unlikely to cause issues .
Right now decent Si E86 are selling well at seemingly strong prices so if you do find one remotely tempting i would act fast .
One here to consider , spec not exactly massive ( no cruise or heated seats) but for its miles / yr / owners the ask is not stretched & if you were lucky to get it down closer to £8k id say somewhat of a bargain right now .

The recent service & 4 new Bridgestones suggest current owner is a conscientious .
Its previous MOT shows all the usual Z4 issues are there  broken springs , uneven tyre wear , corroded brake pipes though look back to its MOT in 2013 & a crack in rear alloy so possibly now repaired or replaced ? worth checking .

Hi there mate welcome to the forum. The benefit with these cars is that they are now c. 15 years old, so potential issues have been identified. If buying, I’d want to see the following work having been done or my budget altered accordingly:

Water pump overhaul - £3-400
ABS Pump - £300
Suspension overhaul (including rear springs as they all break) :£? - not sure, previous owner sorted on mine. Perhaps someone else can indicate.

Other than that, they are generally pretty solid cars. If you are buying a “low mileage” one (below 70,000 average), I would check that it’s been properly serviced (often they come up having only been serviced a couple of times based purely on mileage), resulting in huge gaps in basic maintenance such as oil changes.

I really wouldn’t be put off by a “high mileage” option at around 100,000, even over. My only stipulation would be that the previous owner(s) have rectified some of the above mentioned jobs and that the car has been taken care of. That is more important than the mileage itself at this stage.

Edit: in terms of where to buy one, I’d highly recommend doing so privately off this forum. Otherwise private off eBay or Autotrader, enthusiast owned is a benefit with these cars

There’s a few autos out there at the moment £8k-£14k dependent largely on mileage including a low miles cat C which seems like a bargain at £8k if it’s been properly repaired. What are you looking for budget/spec wise?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

That one "mr wilks" has spotted on Ebay looks pretty well priced if you don't mind black with black.

I had my 2 manual 3.0Sis for over 5 years and they didn't give me any major or unexpected problems. The first one needed a new water pump and the 2nd had an advisory for corroded rear brake pipes 2 years running so I got them replaced in copper. They run under the passenger side of the car in a plastic cover and road dirt gets trapped in the end of it. 2nd one also needed a new A/C condensor, but that's not really a reliability issue.

As to what to look for most people prefer the Sport model because they all had the highly desirable M-Sport seats as standard, although I have seen a few SE models with them fitted as an option. And look out for options like Bi-Xenons, cruise, rear parking sensors, heated seats, MFSW - BMW were a bit mean with standard kit!

Anyway I hope you manage to find one that suits you.

Thanks for all the reply's guys.
I did look at the one on ebay.
I don't want to spend more than £10k on a car.

Don't auto's need a gearbox service at 80k?
