Looking to buy first Z4... advice

I see no one has mentioned a 2.2?

If your debating between the 2.0 and 2.5, then why not go for a 2.2?

ok... so a year has passed since i posted this thread and i still have the damn astra... and now it is definately time to change up to the Z4. the better thing about a year passing is that my budget has increased to (if i need) about 18k. The bad thing, however, is that my employers are pretty much controlling the car i get. They have introduced a new 'eco' policy that all employees lose their car allowances if a car over 200 c02 emissions is purchased and to be honest, the £5k a year allowance is pretty useful. So that leaves me with the following choices:

1. Post 2006 2.0i SE
2. Post 2006 2.0i sport
3. Post 2006 2.5i SE
4. Post 2008 2.5i sport

Obviously going for the 2.0 (either SE or sport) will get me a newer car with less millege but the 2.5 is more tempting. Any opinions on the above would be grateful...

...my next issue is insurance!!! last year when i was looking into this i was being quoted between £900 and £1.3k for the various z4 models. However, i tried getting a quote on confused this afternoon for the 2.0i sport and was quoted £1.3k with excess of £1999!!!!! thats ridiculous. Whats going on? I'm 27 with 3 years NCB and 3 points (CU80)... why am i not finding any realistic quotes????

all help and advice appreciated...

Sorry your right it's 202g

OK that means mine's no good to you but don't discount other private cars that come with BMW warranty, as this gives you the same protection as buying from a Main Dealer and 2-3k cheaper.

Mikee,

I'm 25 and just bought my Z4 2.0l. I'm paying just over a grand for insurance (4years NCB and no points). I'm with swiftcover. Price comparison websites sometimes fail to get prices from swiftcover (just says unable to quote) try getting a quote from them directly.

I was looking through approved used too but the prices are 2-3k higher than a private sale. I just searched autotrader for months and managed to find one with low mileage out in Wales and went to pick the car up 500mile round trip but worth it for the drive up the coast. Saved £5k on what the dealer wanted for a similar car. Buying one from a forum member has the benefit of having most of the mods you want already installed!

Thanks for the responses, you are right, I shouldn't discount private sales, but I do feel slightly nervous about it due to my knowledge of cars and zeds is pretty small. I will keep an eye out though.

With regards to insurance, the best quote I have so far is £1,350 (£500 excess) which is from Swiftcover. Annoyingly, it is my postcode which is making the difference and keeping the car on the road overnight. Was quoted £940 for my parents address in surrey (on a driveway). Just can't justify over £1k for insurance and (thankfully) I haven't lived at my parents address for 8 years! I will continue trying the non-comparison website insurers and see if I can get anything better.

Also... One further question with regards to insurance. Is there usually a significant decrease after the first year of owning your first 'performance' car??

Still not much luck with better insurance quotes. £1,250 is the best I've found. Any suggestions?...

Test drove a beauty on Saturday. 2.0si sport in montego blue. 28k on the clock... Very very tempted. Just need a slightly better insurance quote.

After I owned my first performance RWD car insurance def went down for me.

Also the likes of Chris Knotts often has very competitive prices.. but you need to have >1 yr of experiance in a high performance rwd car.

Do you mean a 2.5si or a 2.0i There is no such thing as a 2.0si :poke:

1.2k insurance on a 2.0 is TOO much!

ha yeah sorry... meant to say 2.0i sport. It is a lot for insurance but its my postcode thats causing it. Its about £350 cheaper for my parents surrey address! Its costing me almost £800 at the moment to insure my 1.7cdi Astra!! Think i'm just going to have to take the hit... and hope that next year it reduces a bit. Its annoying, but i can afford it so not too many worries...

...any suggestions on other insurers to try would be great.
