Looking for my First Z4

Hi!

I was looking into Z4's and blundered happily into this site, which seems like just the ticket for a chap like me. Already spent many happy hours browsing the forums and what a trove of great info it has been! The buyers guide was especially excellent as a resource.

My story is that I drove a Z4 E89 3.0 as a rental through the Brecons/Snowdonia on a 5-day holiday and pretty much fell in love with the looks and feel of the thing. Not much of a surprise to hear that I'm now looking for one of my very own!

Anyway, I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to things like this. Not least because I have the technical knowledge of a tomato and don't really know anything about cars other than that you press the pedal on the right to make them go faster. So, it would be pretty invaluable to get insights and advice from you fine people.

What I want is a nice low-mileage 3.0 that won't break within 20 minutes of me buying it and has not ever crashed headon into a HGV and been pieced together afterwards with gaffer tape and polyfilla. With those stringent requirements in mind, I've tracked down the following two candidates:

Being a Z4 virgin as far as ownership goes, I'd love to get some opinions. Anything that you'd recommend to beware of in E89s? Anything about these two that strikes you as fishy? I'm at the point of going to have a look-see at both of them so any input from you guys with wiser heads than me would be warmly welcome!

Welcome along Onion!

I like the look of the yellow one 8) , I don't know much about E89's but there are plenty on here who do and will be able to offer you advice!

Yellow one for me too.(not for obvious reasons either!)
I think its an excellent price and the mileage is very low. (They're both a good price)
Benefit of grey one is its being sold by a stealer but the age of the yellow one, there's hardly going to be any issues and it still has bmw warranty anyway.
Alan's buyers guide will help you with what to look for regarding any accident cover ups.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Many thanks for the responses!

I'm a sucker for the yellow one too. Although I'll be interested what response I would get showing up to work in it!

If you work in a hairdressers they'll love it :P

Welcome Onion

I love the yellow one too - looked at it every time I have been on Autotrader recently... Not because I want it, but I just love how it looks. It is not top spec, but it's an unbeatable price for those miles, the wheels are great and the spec is enough to be getting on with for sure.

They've both got low mileage and the yellow one does look good with the black 19" and those seats.......however change the 17" rims on the grey to a decent set of 19" and it will look fantastic plus it has memory seats, and comfort pack which is nice!
Grey for me all day

I'd probably agree with that actually, it's the alloys that put me off the grey one, otherwise that's the one I'd go for.

It's nothing to do with the colour for me (honest :P ), but sort the alloys and it's a fairly small mileage difference - but a big difference in terms of price, full leather seats etc.

Thanks for the input!

Changing out the 17" stock wheels for 19" on the Grey would definitely be something I would be keen to do. However, seems to me that by the time I'd got the alloys and a new set of tyres, I wouldn't be far off the price of the Yellow. Unless you can point me in the direction of more reasonably priced 19" alloys!!

Hello and Welcome!

Of the two, the Yellow is lovely, but I've seen better specs on BMW AUC for not a lot more money.

There's a white 3.0 with Nav, 6k miles and under 23k on AUC right now...

GLWTS!

Hi and welcome to the Forum

Whatever you do CHECK, CHECK and CHECK again to make sure you get a good Zed. Some sad tales on here where people didn't and ended up with problems (no service book etc). Dont always believe what your told believe what you see and go with that first gut feeling. Any doubts then walk away - plenty out there.

There is a general check list link in my signature which may be of use but generally refers to problems with E86/86 models but the 'general' points will make sure you get a good buy. It really doesn't take long to go through.

Good luck and pics when you buy! :)

Keep the 17" in the garage and pop a set of winters on for when the white stuff comes again - win win
