Looking for garage / mechanic recommendation for South London / Croydon (SW16)

Hello everybody,

I'm looking for a trustworthy garage near me and had no luck with the search function.

I need to get a few pretty standard things done (service, change rear coils, stuff like that).

I currently live in South-West London (SW16 - Streatham), so anything in this area (including down to Croydon) would be brilliant. I know Ross from RBM is not too far away geographically, but it's still a 1.5h drive from where I am, so not ideal as my everyday mechanic.

My main points that I am looking for are:
  • Should be able to get there by public transport fairy easily (in case I need to leave the car)
  • I am price conscious but I am not cheap, so happy to pay fair money for a good job.
  • Would be nice to have someone with decent Z4 experience but, as mine is not an M, this is not a must as long as they know what they're doing

Any advice and recommendations would be very welcome!

Thanks in advance, guys!

RBM Hampshire if you’re willing to travel a little bit.

Request their courtesy car if the journey is not completely ideal.

Hi there mate - I was in a similar position to you when I was living in Clapham.

I went with BMS Surrey for the Z's Inspection II. They were reasonable (£110 labour for Inspection II as I supplied parts and oil) and not far from where you are (it was a 40 minute drive from Clapham).

I "worked from home" from a local cafe whilst they did the service, but if you needed to leave the car with them the station (Leatherhead) is just round the corner. From BMS Surrey you could be at Streatham station within the hour.

Thanks for the suggestions so far - really appreciate it!
I have reached out for a quote at least. I guess if I get most of the stuff I want done at the same time it's worth driving that far.
Still, keen to know if anyone knows any good garages a little more central.

My sister used BMS in Leatherhead for the first job on her Mini and was quite happy with them.

But she moved to Sutton a few years ago and is quite happy taking it to GMG Motors in Sutton:- http://www.gmgmotors.co.uk/, although parking there can be tricky!

Since Ross opened RBM I've been there a few times and been very pleased.

Before that I used TWG Automotive in Camberley with both my cars for 5 years or so and was also very happy using them:- http://www.twgautomotive.co.uk/
It's a bit nearer than RBM, Will is also ex-Sytner and also has a courtesy car.

Thanks a lot everyone for so many kind and helpful recommendations!

I think I've found a good local garage, very close to where I live that I will use for the run-of-the-mill stuff and will take the car to Ross at RBM for anything a little more specialist.

Of course, only time will tell whether my the local folks (K&J Garages in Streatham) are any good.
However, I did have a long chat with the guy and he seems to be quite knowledgeable and he's rund his workshop as a family business since the late 80s. Their online reviews are terrific and it was nice to see that he advised me not to do some of the work I intended to have done after he looked at the service history and the car, even though that obviously means he won't earn money on that when he could have. He was also very open about what he can and cannot do.

So hopefully they'll work out 🤞 - I've got it booked in for late March (earliest appointment, so they are busy too) and will report back if people are interested.

He’s a bit of a skelp for you, but Adrian at Gilberts for BMW in Gunnersbury was my go to guy. Really knowledgeable and great to deal with, and he’s a short walk from Acton Town tube.

ETA hopefully he’s still on the go; I left London 1.5 years ago.
