Looking for a Z4 2.0 between £6000 - £9000

Hi All,

This is my first post on the forum! Nice to meet to all!

I'm thinking about the taking the Z4 plunge, however i commute into London daily and being a younger(ish) driver insurance will be an utter ball ache for anything more than 2.0 liter.

Do you think it's realistic that i could get a Z4 2005 onwards with less than 40,000 on the clock for between £6000 - £9000 ? I am completely new to BMW so any advice would be much appreciated.

Secondly can you get the 2.0 in hard top coupe?

Thanks in advance for any feedback !!

Greg

Hi Greg & welcome to all things Z :)
2.0 Z4 as your introduction ? why not ? you will get great enjoyment & maybe if you are hooked move through the engines as insurance becomes more affordable ?
I,m no roadster expert but i would be surprised if you can't hit your target . . maybe the mileage may have to move up a little ?
The better looking hard top coupe can be found for £9k but miles will be up & only available in a 3.0 265BHP engine :driving:
Enjoy your search & feel free to post link to any possibles

yeah you can easily get a 2.0 for less than 9000 quid

prob be some around for around 8k more than easily..

the 2.0 is only available as a roadster....

are you sure you couldnt get insured on a six cylinder model instead? how old are you?

im 22 and get insured on an ///M...

but had a 2.0 when i was 19 and the insurance was astronomically high.....gut wrenchingly high....

i would plump for a six cylinder if i were you though, the 2.0 isnt a bad car, keeps up with the 6 cylinders thru the bends, but eventually the speed gets a bit, well sluggish

You will be able to get a Z4 2.0 litre for your money - if you look carefully enough you might even be able to get one with a hard top which would give you the best of both worlds - the Zed Roadster looks great with a hard top. If you're lucky and haggle hard you might get a facelift (2006 on) car with a hard top but I'm not sure you'll find the mileage you're hoping for. The 2 litre is ok on fuel and I think gets used more....? You should be patient and look at all advertising media and keep a look out on this forum - you might have luck and get a chance at something with known history.
Do read through the threads on what to look out for when buying and get to know the car and particularly the options - you might want to hold out for parking assist at the rear and heated seats for example. The SE version will be cheaper than the sport, has different tyre sizes 17" not 18" as well as interior spec being varied. That makes tyres cheaper. Leather interior and sport seats are preferred by most and the ride on the sport can be too hard for some. Try and get a wind excluder included and buy with a full BMW or specialist service record or you'll find it hard to sell on. There are lots and lots out there so take time and care with your choice and you will get a minter. There's also a six pot 2.2 litre that might be insurable?
I bought the 2.0i sport and it corners brilliantly and i love how it can be rev'd out in the first three gears without killing your licence but still capable and fun plus insurance cheaper as well as tax and petrol costs.

Read through everthing you can on this forum - ask questions - take your time and you'll get a fabulous car that performs and looks way beyond what you paid for it!

The 2.0L is an utterly slow car.

No it isn't.

If you are Jeremy Clarkson and get to drive proper fast cars regular like, then maybe, but to the rest of humanity it is actually quite nippy.

Its only 160bhp though no? 118bhp per tonne and no torque.

Nah not for me sorry.

Thanks for all the response guys!

Woots - i am 20 and the 2.0 is coming out at around £1500 which shocked me actually, you would be surprised how low that is compared to other cars.

Although i have had the odd 1.8, i am currently driving a 1.4 Punto Grande! So speed wont be a problem as long as its fun to drive through the first few gears that's good enough for me.

Woody - That car looks lush, however its 'damaged - repaired' which doesn't float my boat, i have lost out on a few cars due to poor service history and damage.

I'm not sure that i understand the face lift, can anyone post a picture of the difference? The six pot 2.2 sounds interesting, i will check out insurance when i get the chance.

So am i right in saying you cannot get a hard top under 3.0litre, even if i could get insured on a 3.0 i think the fuel would just be too much.

If anyone does see anything promising when searching around please give me a shout.

Thanks again for the help!!

Answer to one of your questions.

face lift has back lights with a horizontal division, original has roundel~ly orange blobs on the rear lights

(EDIT as above)

it is 150hp not 160. It may not be 'technically fast' but in normal use I find that I can scare my own pants off and I rarely get stuck behind anything else.

I totally agree.

ha my first car was a grande punto  lovely looking lil car...
your following a similar car purchase history to me except i had a one series in between....
wow a 2.0 for 1500 at aged 20 is good going, i paid about 3 times that amount when i was 19....no joke....
shop around for insurance on a 3.0...you may find it for less than 2k, which is a bargain!!

I'd 110% recommend the 2.0 - you don't miss having extra power 90% of the time, it's a great engine!

Completely agree. I had a 2.0 and for day to day use its the most sensible option. It's quick enough for most. You'll get a good example for your money no problem. Enjoy yourself, half the fun is in the hunt

It is a great engine and fast enough to be fun and useful on the road - especially these days. I have the 2.0i sport and with good planning can pass most traffic - with more power I might be tempted too much and end up with points or worse. You can always wait for the wiggly bits and leave most traffic way behind. Enjoyed the performance of my tvr chimeara but could only use the full power occasionally. The 4 pot is smooth and keen enough to keep on the boil - in fact keep an eye on the rev counter as its easy to take the engine into the red zone its so smooth - and not taxing like the S2000 at high revs. 6 gears but the first 4 for performance unless on the motorway where you will need to slip into lower gears for a sharp overtake.
Have to say if you want to make fast progress on our congested roads nothing beats a motorbike to exploit all overtaking - 100+ horsepower on well handling two wheeler - yehaa!

2008 Sepang Bronze M coupe with champagne leather. Painted calipers, stubby, personal reg

And you are now driving the only car I would consider swapping it for.
But I am not going to.
We plan to keep the 2.0 and add something in Sepang when I have some spare coppers.

Cheers

When those who doesn't have a 2.0 litre talk about the 2.0 litre not being fast enough it's all cobblers. Half the fun of any of these cars is in the corners and the twisties. Any tool can go fast in a straight line.
