Looking for a cheap runabout

My daily drive is a 2005 honda accord 2.2ctdi, been extremely reliable only needing 2 abs sensors in 120000 miles of motoring, very comfortable cabin, leather heated seats, decent audio ac as standard,45mpg on my commutes (get 26.4 in the zed) going for peanuts these days and highly recommended from me

Take that rover, add tax, mot, insurance, servicing, whatever component that will probably need replacing in year 1... you're probably looking at a 1200-1500 bill for a year, would you lose 1200 in depreciation on the zed?

Totally disagree. Buy the right run about and the cost next to nowt to run. Closer to 300-400 for an old git with cheap insurance. :D

Sure if you buy a old fast car they cost a bomb to run. So don't

Works even better, if you want to keep your Zed a long while as it does keep the miles off. It's not just about saving money. If I had only driven my Zed, since I bought it would be on 90-100k by now and 150k in a few years time and possibly become uneconomical to maintain.

So I'm keeping my old run about, even if mines not very economical. :P

+1. I absolutely love bangernomics to the point where I enjoy driving a banger as much as the z4 but in different ways

So much so I actually spent more on wheels & suspension than my z4

Bangernomics had me buy a 320d when I was commuting over 100 miles each day. Man maths allowed me to replace it with an S2000 when my commute reduced to a fifth of that :D

I just had a similar dilemma and ended up doing something stupid. Just in case you might do the same here's a curve ball for you.

Bargain PZ at £2750. Needs nothing other than fuel which isn't quite your 40mpg requirement.

Done a bit more research, parameters I've set are max mileage 100k, 40+ mpg and max price £2000. Surprisingly the Mini is looking like pretty good value at the moment...

Cooper s is where i thought I'd be until i got derailed. They look very good value for money but before you know it you'll be spending 4k on a works. And that's a great choice.

Celiac gen7. I'm biased but it's extremely practical and cheap with some poke. Get the 140, not the 190...

I use a Clio DCi, £30 road tax, 63mpg average. Handles surprisingly well, especially in the dry.
The interior is very low end and no thrills though.

Nice to know I am not alone in this!

Bought a Mazda 323F as a cheapy to go with the Z4 as I had to have something practical - 16 years old, only 3 elderly owners, 66,000 miles, 1500cc so cheapRFL, non-interference engine so drive it until the cam-belt snaps - looked ideal. Lasted 3 months before I got fed up with pulling out to overtake on a hill on the way to work only to find I couldn't!! Then I couldn't keep up with a diesel Corsa at a set of lights - it had to go!

So last November I picked up a 325ti Sport in Imola Red (for just under £2,000) - that's more like it! N/A Straight 6, RWD, full leather and the right soundtrack - lovely! It's never going to do 40 mpg but do I care? It's averaging the right side of 30 despite some spirited driving so as good as the Z4.

The only downside is I don't use the Z4 as much, but it is still special when I do! Man maths tells me I only wear out the one I use (don't mention the 2 x Band K RFL :? ).

I know Rover's are shite but could this be worth a look, it's nearly new!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :telloff:

In all seriousness though that one of those rare finds that are hard to resist, not for me though... I despise rovers
