Looking for a cheap runabout

In an attempt to keep the miles off the zed, I've been thinking of getting a cheap hack, must be under 3k, at least 40mpg and have 0-60 measured in seconds rather than minutes. Oh and in Surrey or local area. This was the first one I've come up with, any comments or other possibles welcome.

I've had 3 runabouts now to keep miles down. Had a couple of mk4 golf gt tdi's both were under £800 and I think they're about 10 seconds to 60. I've never had any problems with either and I've now got a Passat tdi highline with 248000 miles on I paid a grand for. Comfortable heated seats and does 50mpg just make sure it's had a cam belt & turbo & your laughing

These would be a good start

MG from 2002? Money pit - you would never last a week with that on the trips …

Get something VW group, anything ...

£100 on a remap, and you have a very reliable very fast car that will handle well, and will confuse the hell out of sportscar drivers as you leave them for dead at the traffic lights

County Durham a bit far to go though!

If you don't need additional practicality, another z4 isn't a bad shout!

(Or maybe my head needs checking!)

I was going to suggest this other than the 40mpg which steered me towards my other suggestions. One other consideration is what the actual outcome of keeping miles off the //M is, as if it is for finantial terms in relation to future value it would probably be better just to drive it.

I would say a mk4 golf GTD or a seat leon FR diesel... 50mpg and 0-60 under 8 seconds... Add a remap and you'r laughing.

I had an E46 320d for a few years to keep the miles off my Zed. It was extremely well balanced and surprisingly quick. The OPD claimed 60mpg at motorway speeds and 45mpg with 50:50 London traffic / A roads. They're cheap and very reliable as long as the swirl flaps have been removed.
I swapped it for an S2000 which is far from cheap to run and bloody noisy on long trips, but lots of fun

I've looked at this for some time, imo some of the best options are just the cheap £50/mo 12/24month lease deals on small hatches, however after many deliberations, keeping miles off the Zed just means not using it, and the cost of second car far outweighs the z4mc depreciation for adding a bit of mileage.

Take that rover, add tax, mot, insurance, servicing, whatever component that will propbably need replacing in year 1... you're probably looking at a 1200-1500 bill for a year, would you lose 1200 in depreciation on the zed?

But you would incur the inspection cost of the M on top of that though as you are adding the miles.

So net cost you're somewhat where you started.. except you're not driving around in a banger and telling people 'i have a nice car in the garage, honest!'

:D

Saying that, i've always been partial to the megane renaultsport.. and there's a thread discussing this one http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201506094173232 already. I'm a fan.
