Looking for a 3.0SE for around £6000

I was hoping you well informed guys could help me on my quest!

I *was* looking at Boxster Ss and 350Zs as well as the Z4, but I have now after test driving all 3 I have decided to opt for the Zed!!

Here are my questions:

Is there any thing I specifically need to look out for on the pre-facelift models mechanically?

If there is a good/full service history would there be any issue in buying one with up to 90k on the clock?

To add on from my last question... Should I go 2003, low mileage (60k for example) or 2005 high (95k), also with the winter coming should I hold off for a possible price dip?! ;)

I was wondering if any of you had any information on the roof issues and rear spring problems that seem to be mentioned every where you look?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

WD

Welcome along :)

£6k should get you a decent enough example, have a look through the classifieds section here for some that may interest you or to look at ones that have sold recently.

In answer to your questions:

1) Roof motor failure due to water ingress can be an issue on pre-facelift models, but one that's been looked after and reguarly cleaned should be fine. Not really a tell-tale sign of one that may fail. Likewise rear-springs can go, but not a lot to give the game away on that either. A good listen to the engine will usually tell you what you need to know mechanically.

2) These engines are pretty bombproof providing they've been well serviced and looked after, so don't be put off by high-mileage on these cars because they're up to 10 years old now, assuming they've got a good service history etc.

3) Don't worry about mileage so much as finding a good example that's got all the options you want (heated seats/cruise control/satnav are some you may look for)... A well looked after and specced car with 80k on the clock is better then an unloved and neglected car thats been bashed for 30k.

Plenty of information on this forum so just have a look around, and you may want to look at AlanJ's buyer guide http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21281

Any more questions feel free to ask

One other thing...

Am I right in thinking that there is no after market hardtop available for this model

Thanks,

WD

I've never seen an aftermarket hardtop. OEM ones are available and about, but usually ridiculously expensive to buy, they pop up on eBay or on the forum every now and then.

Sent you a PM about my one if interested - if you research all the niggly things that need doing with the Zed, you'll see I've had them all done - I didn't mention I have a full set of winters, though believe I will need these for my new toy

I know you're after a 3.0 but if you were prepared to drop to a 2.5 you could do alot worse then looking at this from a forum member:

I must admit hat does look well and looks well looked after too. Is there much of a difference performance wise do you know? I can read figures, but just wondered if anyone has driven both...?

I don't think there is much real world difference. The only thing that put me off a 2.5 was that they only have a 5 speed box.

I would be very tempted by that car its got all the right bits on it and a good price.

Not driven it but sat behind this very car in my 3.0 on the Skye run and trust me this car kept up really well to say the least - we often say on here that between the 2.5 and 3.0 buy the best you find- of either model.

not seen PS car for a couple of years but I think 50 percent of what I know about z4s I learnt from PS you would struggle to buy of someone with more knowledge of zeds.
